new Kindle...what do I need to know....

Hi BB friends, my DD11 got a Kindle Fire for Christmas, please educate me to make the most of it. She has gotten a few free aps like games and internet. What's the best way to find free/cheap books and apps?

I don't do apps either, so I can't help you there.

As far as free books, does your library offer e-books? I mostly use my libraries website. There are sometimes waiting lists for popular titles.

Also, are you a member of Amazon Prime? There is a free lender's library with amazon prime.

Also you can Google Kindle Fire department. It is a blog and she posts every day on different books and apps that are free or very cheap.

To really make the most of your kindle fire it pays to be Amazon Prime members. You get free TV and movies streaming and they have a lending library for Prime members where you get to loan out books once a month for free. Top name books.

If you belong to Netflix they can download the Netflix app and watch Netflix on it too.

But for $79 a year you can't go wrong with Prime. It's worth it even if you never use the free shipping part of it.

I have a Kindle Fire HD and in my opinion, it's definitely worth it to get the Prime Membership. For $79, you can borrow a book monthly from the Kindle Library, watch the free shows or movies (which I do a lot) on Prime Instant Video, and especially the free 2nd day shipping, which is so unbelievably helpful for a procrastinator like me.

You mentioned your DD was only 11, so you can definitely let her watch some of the children's shows / movies with the prime instant videos.
The apps, I don't really download.. but I know everyday, they will have a new "free app of the day" thing. So that may help you.

with an 11 year old you might want to password protect everything. My hairdressers grand daughter ran up quite a bill as her parents did not password protect all purchases , even free stuff. Or load an Amazon gift card into the account so there are limits on what she can purchase.

There are a bunch of free books available on Amazon. While they are not the latest and greatest, they are free.

Another free book source is bookbub. Though most of the books are geared towards adults.

My DS8 got a Kindle Fire last year for Christmas and hands down the best thing I have done is check Amazon everyday for their free app of the day. I download anything I think he would be interested in and if he doesnt' like it, no biggie. It was FREE! He has found so many good apps that he just loves. I have also found that around holidays (like Christmas Eve) they offered 5 or 6 free apps. Totally worth it.

I also use Kindle Free Time, where I can limit the amount of time he plays with apps.

I have over 900 free full books on my Kindle fire hd. Just beware that some books will say preview (first 10 chapters). I see that a lot in the kids selection.

On Amazon search type in ...free kindle childrens books ages 9-12. You will get some that show for a price mixed in with free ones. On the right top there is a drop down box you can go to ..low to high.. to list the freebies first.

To find free books in the kindle, select the word books at the top. Then in the search icon area, enter free kindle ____ books (young adult, childrens, an age range). Then use the refine icon to search form price high to low.

You can do the exact same thing with apps, by pressing the apps icon. A new free ap of the day will be available, just by selecting it.

I have had a Kindle fire, Fire HD and I now also have the HDX. I 100% support password protection for purchasing!
