New Kindle question

I know this was discussed here months ago but I searched and can't find the original threads.

Mom and Dad got me a new Kindle. I'd like to be able to read the books that they bought and put on theirs. I have Dad's name and password for his amazon account and was able to deregister my kindle and put it into his name......

and then I was stuck. Most everything I read just says - "OK - now download the book you want" But I can' find any sort of "library" or whatever to do that. Would someone here be able to walk me through it?

Barbara, once your new Kindle is registered to your dad's account, it should automatically download his Archives to your device. You need to have the wifi working or the 3G turned on, of course - which model did you get? If you have wifi only, you will need to enable your Kindle to receive the wireless signal in your house. Otherwise you will have to go somewhere that has free wifi - Starbucks, Panera, etc. for the first download. Once the Archives are available, you can download any book to your Kindle by selecting that book and sending it to your Kindle.

You should also rename your Kindle to "Barbara's Kindle" instead of "Dad's 3rd Kindle." Once all the Kindles are registered, each new purchase will have a drop-down menu and you can select the Kindle to which the book should be sent.

I think I may see the problem - he doesn't archive his books - he says he doesn't know how but we can look that up.

I have both 3G and wireless - I'm all set that way and have downloaded a bunch of free books but I was really hoping to get mom and dad's - that is actually why I asked for a Kindle because I always borrowed their books before they went electronic on me!

Additionally when I went (under his name and password) to amazon/kindle to his media library all it showed there was a Dec 25, 2010 Kindle User's guide - no books at all (despite the fact that he is reading a book right now on it!)

Hmm, that's weird - are you sure he doesn't have another account? All of his purchased materials should show up under Manage My Kindle - there should be a list and you should be able to select each book and send it to an individual Kindle.
