New kennel rules ??

I was looking for an alternative to having to come back from the parks everyday to walk to dogs. I knew they had kennels at MK and thought maybe it would be worth driving there and kenneling the dogs there and just going back and walking them a couple of times.

If I am reading this correctly, all four parks AND FW have kennels available and it says it includes to potty breaks a day and 2 meals. You can also pay more for more walks or playtime. The only kennels that don't offer potty breaks is HS and AK.

What do you think ??

As a long time kennel user at FW, I have been wondering how things are going to sort out after the takeover by that private company, especially regarding daily fees.

You need to read the new prices on this site, they doubled the daily rate and added walking for $ 5.00 each walk. The new daily rate for guests is $18.00 daily. Its now going to get expensive to Kennel pets.

We bring our Rv so I guess we will be ok, they seem to be raising rate everywhere.

I'm too lazy to look for stuff on the board, so I just read this forum. I knew the takeover was not gonna be good. The kennel was one of the best deals Disney had on property, IMHO. I wonder what happened to the staff - the Wonder Beagle really liked them.

I know if I left my dog in the vet(which I hate to do) it's more than $18.00 a day..they start around $25.00 and then it's based on weight after that. They also don't walk him. They have a small outdoor cement run. I couldn't do that Toby the Terrible. Only joking about the terrible part.. He's a 1 1/2 year old Sheltie. It had been a while since having a puppy in the house..and well, he ate two pairs of underwear (let's just say my daughter has literally "cleaned up her act" since then! ) We had a friend of my daughters stay in the house when we all went to Disney last year. That cost me WAY more than $18.00 a day. Yet, she walked Toby 4 times a day...played with him, ran him and became his best friend! Not to mention there was someone in the house for the mail and the like. I will probably do that again(our pup get's car sick,so no long trips with the little puker

I'm not sure what the kennel rates were before but the $18.00 doesn't sound to high to me...and if they actually WALK the pets for the $5.00, I'd be willing to pay for that. I suppose if one planned to be out for the day, that would save a return trip...it would be worth that much. I haven't taken my pet to FW, but don't many campers leave their pets in the RV's..and then return to walk them?
I know my son has offered dog walking services in the camping resort we are seasonal in. It's near a tourist area and it's not uncommon for campers to be gone for the day, and he's usually given more than $5.00 for a walk. Mostly he lets the camper decide what to pay him, and folks have been pretty generous. I think the $5.00 for a walk is good deal.

So it looks like the 18 bucks is for overnight, and since we only board during the day it will be 15. I probably won't take advantage of the walking since I like doing it and Mickey gets a little squirrelly with strangers, unless they kept the old staff on board.

That doesn't sound unreasonable to me at all. Including 2 walks..real walks?..not just "here's a cement cell..walk around". That's all you get at some places. I guess the rates have apparently increased, but it also sounds to me as if the pets are getting a fair amount of attention, at two walks a day.

You're assuming I'm whining about the fee, which I'm really not. If you look at it from an economics standpoint, however, it is a 50% increase in fees, and when you add that fee for a 10 day stay, it is 150bucks, in addition to the daily rate for the pet loop. My main concern is the change in the kennel, to include the staff. I have really liked the staff there, which has remained pretty much unchanged for the past 10 years at least. The immediate increase in the daily fee is merely an illustration of the changes this new company is imposing, fixing an operation that in my opinion was not broken.

I understood what you were saying. We didn't use the kennels last time because we would have to come back and walk them anyway so we didn't see the point. The dogs would rather be in their crates in the motorhome than a strange kennel anyway.

Compared to the kennel we have here at home, $15 for the day is a bargain.

I would think it would be in the new company's best interest to keep the existing employees in place. Makes sense for everyone. I would be surprised if they brought in an all new staff.

I do think they needed to make a change with the kennels. I think it would be even better if they redid the building so that each kennel had it's own outside run attached. That's what I think of as a kennel.

Wow! Now that "kennel" looks fabulous and worth every penny.

$15 dollars a day would be great for us...that way we know our little dog is pottied and we do not have to take time out of the park day to go back and take him potty. He is little...so he cannot hold it longer than the bigger dogs.

Here are some more numbers; we have 2 dogs now, that would be $30 a day and I generally am able to get a partial hook-up site for $35 a day before tax. That just makes no sense. According to the web site of the critter contractors, they will be opening a new luxury pet facility nearby (maybe that's what they're building over on bay lake by the golf course). They should keep the on site kennels as they are and direct everyone to the new place for this:

I think we will end up going back to the site for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Our dog, Finn (3 yrs old) is very skittish and has anxiety issues. As appealing as it would be to NOT have to come back to the site, I think he will do better with us that strangers. If he had a dog run of his own and didn't have to be walked by other people, I think it would be ok. We are working with a trainer to try to help ease his anxiety, but I am not holding out hope that he will become a whole new dog by then, sigh. I think our puppy would be fine....she loves everyone.

I don't MIND coming back for them....my only concern is that the parks will be really crowded and we are going to lose quite a bit of park time going all the way back to FW...especially when we are at MGM and AK (which we are only spending one day each at).

Yeah, I fall into the popup category with my hybrid, so we kennel the beagle during the day. In the past , it has been no problem since I feel better about him not being alone all day in a strange environment. He really likes the staff at the FW kennel. Despite the fact that we love him and he is a member of the family, he is a dog and I'm not sure he would appreciate bedtime stories or televisions. He pays no attention to TV at home, which probably demonstrates a higher level of intelligence than I have. I agree with you - have the "luxury kennel" for those who want that level of service, but leave the FW kennel alone for those of us whose dog's don't require that kind of pampering.
