Just out of interest as getting a bit worried now, if the flights were to be cancelled (which we booked direct with monarch from manchester) what would happen to our Disney booking? Not sure wether to ring them beforehand in case, it's difficult to know what to do, would both flight and hol bookings honour a later date, and if the insurance doesnt cover you does the credit card? really wouldn't know where to start!

I'd like to guess that Disney or your insurance would be able to help you out, but i'm not too sure, so hopefully someone will be able to help you

You could ring Disney if you thought you were going to be there any time soon and let them know when you anticipated arrival. If you need to abandon your trip...well, you'd need to contact your insurance company. Not many will cover this.

You can try credit cards but my bet would be no...

Chances are, like us, if you can't go, you'll have to do the best you can to reschedule, or (if like me, you have NO control over your holidays), cut your losses and accept that the money is gone.

Well, due to this eruption, it looks like a number of airlines are refusing to fly through Scottish airspace tomorrow

The next batch of International College Prog participants are due to fly out to FL tomorrow, with quite a few of them flying down from Scotland to LON and then onto the US.

I really feel for them! So much money, work and effort has gone into applying and organising the ICP, and understandably, many of my new Scottish ICP friends are worried, upset and annoyed at this recent turn of events. Many are debating whether to try and attempt to get to Manchester and fly from there, or to just sit it out....

I have no idea what I would be doing if I were in their shoes - probably having a good cry lol! I know it's not the end of the world, but still.... the ICP is a big deal for us.

My check in date for the ICP isn't until June 19th so I'm hoping things "blow over" for me and the other June 19th-ers. It would be great if you could send some pixie dust to my Scottish friends for tomorrow though

That is where contacting them to find out your options is not a bad idea. The terms and conditions reflect heavy penalties for cancellation and amendments the closer you get to your trip and the problem with disruptions like this is that you don't know for sure where you stand until the 11th hour (or later) by which stage, going by the book with the Ts&Cs you are looking at loss of 100% of your payment. I don't think it would hurt to call them up and ask what your options would be should the situation arise, with regard to rescheduling. At least it gives you something to work with.

Kath is right, most basic insurance plans do not cover cancellation and abandonment, but almost all have the option to take out a higher level of cover which does insure you for this. I won't travel without it and have been looking at insurance quotes for this trip (I know, I should have done it ages ago ) and I see that the same policy I took out last year has gone up almost £40 for single trip 17 day cover. But that covers me for pretty much everything I can think of including ash cloud, provided it is not 'known' at the time of taking out the policy SO if there is an ash cloud Iceland needs to pick a different volcano A little over a year ago I may have taken one level down, but since the last one in April 2010, it's just not worth the gamble for me to try and save £40 in insurance on a holiday that cost me several thousand £££

Easy for me to sit here and say don't worry, and I won't tell you not to, but try and get as much information on your various options before worrying too much about it.

Forgive me as I sneak into this thread and subscribe. We're scheduled to fly into London from Toronto in a 1.5 weeks and then onto Barcelona for the Med Cruise. This ash cloud has me worried... maybe not so much that the ash cloud will still be a threat 1.5 weeks from now but it might throw all the flight schedules into disarray and make travelling more of a headache than it already is.

I hope you don't mind if I visit here to learn what the heck is going on there. We've got insurance for everything but it won't pay for the London theatre tickets or what we've prepaid for the Doctor Who Experience!!

I wish I could nuke that volcano but that'll just bring up more ash!

I have just rang Disney and the lady said if we did have to cancel last minute, because we booked a package (hotel and tix) we should get a full refund back onto our credit card, so that sounds quite reassuring, hopefully it won't come to that but I have lost the pre planning excitement now just in case

This is hopeful:

The cloud of volcanic ash spreading from the Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland has already lead to some airlines cancelling flights in the UK, with Scottish services the most affected.

But Transport Secretary Philip Hammond told the BBC any disruption would be unlikely to last long.

He said that after last year's ash cloud event "we've learned a great deal", and the government had worked with airlines and engine manufacturers to maintain safety with far fewer interruptions to services.

Yes, I happily posted a statement on Saturday where they said that it wasn't going to have any impact on us, thinking it was good news .... a few hours later it was a completely different story and my post was rubbish.

I just called Columbus Insurance and even more worried than before. Am kicking myself as I meant to book this insurance last week.
I have 2 trips booked, a week in Majorca in 4 weeks time and 3 week to Orlando from 3rd August. They said that if I booked annual insurance today, I would not be covered for ash cloud for either trip!! Infact, as there is an ash cloud event going on at the moment, I wouldn't be covered for the entire time of the policy! Therefore they actutally agreed that there is no point booking an annual insurace at this time.
I actually already have annual insurance with my bank but it doesn't cover strikes and I was worried about potential of Virgin strike. Wasn't even thinking about ash cloud. Have to pay for holiday in a few weeks. Just very angry with myself for not getting this all sorted earlier.
Anyone find an insurance company that will cover you for August trip now?

Sorry, but why would a newly purchased insurance company offer cover for the ash cloud that has already started?! The whole point is to cover for unforeseen events.

Sorry, I don't think I made myself very clear, the point I was trying to make was that even if this particular ash cloud goes away and flights continue as normal for several months, if there is another ash cloud situation during the time of the policy, I would not be covered, even if it was next April. So what they were saying really is that there is no point buying an annual insurance policy at this time because no matter what, you will not be covered for any ash cloud for the entire year. They said when the all clear has been given, to call back and they would then confirm if they were covering for this type of event again.
I of course understand that there will no insurance company will be covering you for this particular eruption if the policy wasn't already purchased.

If it's any consolation, a friend of mine arrived back from Florida today with no problems. I think as long as the ash cloud doesn't get any worse, transatlantic flights should remain okay.

I hope so anyway! I know how awful I'd feel if I were in your guys' position right now

Friends were supposed to fly out from Aberdeen this morning and then Gatwick to MCO at 11.15 today.

They have hired a car and are safely in a hotel at Manchester airport.
Virgin managed to get them moved to a flight tomorrow at 2pm

Fingers crossed that it is only 1 day at All Stars they are losing Then in 5 days time they will have DCL to look forward to
