New Hotel at Disneyland Cancelled

Weird after how much DTD rental income they cancelled.

Although the drawing released this year sure didn’t look like their ‘A’ team was working on it.

I would wonder if this makes it more likely for a smaller DVC in the area, since I thought the original tax break did not allow timeshares.

Even conversion elsewhere requires permits, and blood is bad between Disney and Anaheim right now.

Building explicit DVC at the scale they would be allowed is unlikely because Anaheim won't approve the build. Under current zoning code it could have a Max of 70 bookable units, and Anaheim likely wouldn't okay a build at that scale. It also wouldn't have great ROI because of land value. At current land valuations, bigger is better.

I feel like DL and the city are in a game of chicken-they keep upping the threats and the stakes. My bet? Somehow miraculously they will all come to agreement at the eleventh hour, probably with terms that Disney feels are much more favorable

Rumor was when the villas were built, the hotel rooms in the new wing were built to easily convert to DVC. So that's a possibility that would not involve land or a new building. The question is would they want to give up hotel rooms. The dues statement for VGC includes these rooms (203 hotel units). If they went ahead with the new hotel, they may have been more willing to convert some of those rooms.

This cancellation is about money. Anaheim passed a resolution that would give Disney tax credits and such if they built in a specific place where Disney told them Disney was going to build. Later, as planning progressed, Disney moved the location. Anaheim, itself, went through an election cycle and new people came in. When Disney went back to Anaheim with the new plans, Anaheim said they don't get the money because they aren't building where the resolution said the building had to go. Disney had the option to go back to the original location, build without the Anaheim money, or start the process over. Apparently, Disney chose the third option.

I don't think cancellation means permanently cancelled when Disney does it. They might just waiting for a better time period for them to make more money. DLRA also might be rethinking the hotel when more large hotels are being built in the area.
