I just discovered this board the other day after spending some time on the DL board. What a great, inspiring board!

After reading some of the posts from people on Atkins and talking to a friend at work today who has been doing Atkins for the past few weeks I really think I would like to try it. I did WW a few years ago and managed to lose 14 pounds but have since gained them all back plus an additional 2 pounds. I'd really like to loose 15-20 pounds and have tried WW again off and on for the past few months but I guess I haven't been serious enough because it hasn't done any good :( . I have fallen into the trap of being a low fat, high carb eater and it hasn't done me any good. I think it's time for a change!!!!

We are leaving for our first trip to Disneyland and California next Friday! I was thinking I'd really like to start Atkins right away (all of you here and my friend at work really have me motivated) but would that be stupid to do when we will be on a 2 week vacation starting next week? I have printed some of the info from the Atkins web site and it seems like something I could probably follow even while on vacation (don't get me wrong it will be very hard to pass up all those yummy deserts and snacks that they probably have at DL) but what do you "Atkins veterans" think? Would I be better off waiting to start when we get home?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Cheryl

I think that I would shoot on make 'lower' carb choices during vacation then go on induction after you return. One of the bonus's for you will be that your body will adjust to very low carbs gradually and you probably won't experience any of the major withdrawal symptoms. I felt horrible going on induction for a good part of the first week --- I wouldn't want to be on vacation while I was feel yucky.

Cheryl,

I personally would wait, why lessen any enjoyment of a Magical trip?

I myself am going to "take a break" from my new lifestyle when I go to WDW in August.

Life is too short to deprive yourself of the best that a vacation has to offer (I just won't go hog-wild like I would have in the past)

Have a great trip!!

:)

Just wanted to say, hello & welcome to WISH.

There are some real Atkins experts here, so ask away.

Enjoy your vacation, we'll be here when you get back!!!:p

I think I'll try reducing the amount of carbs I am eating starting now but then go full force on induction when we get home. I am so excited to have found this board and the support it gives!
Thanks for the tips!

Cheryl

Cheryl, I just want to welcome you to WISH! I think your plan of dropping carbs a bit, and then going full out when you get back from vacation is a good one. It's hard to stay on plan when you are on vacation, even if you are used to a healthy eating plan. I think it would be really hard to start your plan and then need to be on induction during your vacation. So, have a great vacation...lucky you!

Linda

Cheryl - we'll be here when you get back!! Go & enjoy yourself - and get started when you get back.

Cheryl N. WI I'm very glad you found this board, too.

Enjoy your vacation and then come back here, we'll be waiting and saving you a place. We'll be here if you need us.

Have a wonderful time on vacation and come back and join us when you get back!! :)

Welcome! It's hard not to get inspired by the folks around here!

Something you may be able to do until you are ready to go onto full blown induction is try what I'm doing... Basically you eat "Atkins way" at all other times than at your one special reward meal. It can be any meal, any time of day. At that meal you just "visually balance" the portion of carbs (can include dessert, pasta, any carb food) with your protein source and veggies. I've found it has helped me with being on the road for work (lots of day trips with no access to my own prepared food) and I don't feel deprived. I actually feel good, my blood sugar has self corrected (no meds needed for that!) and I don't have reactive hypoglycemic episodes (that super tired, weak sick feeling) that used to happen a couple hours after a low fat high carb meal.

It may get you through your time up to and through your trip and help get your system ready for induction, and maybe once you start induction you'll find you have fewer withdrawal symptoms than others have had.

Hi Cheryl,

I think you should start a modified Atkins now. I have tried every treat at Disneyland and they are not that good. ;) Just trust me.

Can't wait to see you on the 16th at Legoland.

I bought the Atkins book when I was at Walgreens today so that I can read it while waiting around in the airport and on the plane next Sat. I have already started cutting back on the amount of carbs that I eat. I have been a "label reader" for quite a while but i always looked at fat and fiber grams and didn't really pay attention to the carbs in foods before. I am changing my label reading habits, it is amazing how many carbs there are in the foods we eat! I also bought a can of the mix to make the Atkins chocolate shake (quite a bit cheaper than what I saw the ready mixed shake cans for at the grocery store) and some of the Atkins bars to try. We went to a picnic tonight for my DD "bridging" from a Brownie to a Junior Girl Scout and I really watched what I ate so that I wouldn't have too many carbs (no roll with my bratwust, no baked beans even though I made them, and NO dessert which was the hardest seeing how usually I would have sampled a small piece of each of the 3 desserts they had). I feel like I am starting in the right direction and then when we get back from our vacation I'll be ready to start full force!

Leslie, we're really looking forward to seeing you at Legoland also! I can't believe we leave in less than a week now.

Just wanted to say hello and welcome! There are so many fine folks here doing Atkins and they are all loving it! I know it will work for you if you give it a shot! Enjoy your vacation and please come back to WISH when you return so we can help you along your weight loss journey! :)

Cheryl, I need you to do me a favor. When you meet Tink33 at Legoland, will you please give her a big old bear hug for me?

She is a sweetheart and has been so kind to me since I first found the DIS. I haven't been lucky enough to meet her yet.

Tig, thanks for the welcome. I will definitely be back here when we get back from our vacation! I have been so inspired by all of you here already and I have really been lowering my carb intake and I have actually lost 3 pounds already! I know I might gain them back on vacation but I am so motivated that I know I will get right back on the wagon when I get home. I have been at 2 events since taking the WISH challeng where ther have been alot of desserts and high carb snacks, but I was so proud of myself both times because I actually had the will power not to eat any of it!

Kath, I'll be sure to give Tink33 that hug for you. We met her and her family on our Magic cruise this past Jan. and her daughter and mine really hit it off! We are really excited to be able to see them again!
