New here, need GIRLY help jazzing up KEDS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all!

I'm relatively new to DISboards, so I am not exactly sure where to post this question. I searched before I posted but couldn't find what I was looking for. I posted on Creative DISigns, but I thought I might want to cross post here. I hope that is okay board manners to cross post. If not, please forgive my faux paux.

I am an avid scrapbooker (old school kind). I've done tons of WDW layouts, all parks so I'm happy to donate ideas when I can. I'm handy w/a Cricut. I've even tried done a digital scrapbook or 2 as gifts.

However, I must admit I am now out of my element and need some advice/ideas. Being the mother of 2 boys, I've never gotten to girl it up at Disney, but in March 2011 I get to take my ONLY niece on vacation with us for my 40th birthday. I'm beyond excited.

I already know a few things she'll need in advance. COSTUMES! She LOVES Tinker Bell, and we want to taker her to Akerhus for the Princess breakfast so she can get her picture with Belle in a Belle dress. But we also need some comfy shoes! She is 4 years old, but those cute shoes that go with those costumes are not made for walking in parks.

I would like to buy some Keds and jazz them up for her with sequins or beads for her costumes. Have any of you done this? Do you use a Bedazzler? or a special glue that won't was off and apply each by hand? What is the best way to go about this for comfort (I don't want something inside the shoe that might be scratchy). She has sensitive skin (doesn't like tags, seams, so nthing scratchy will do).

I apologize if this a repetitive post, but I searched several ways trying to find something about this on DISboards to no avail!

TIA!

Hi there.

You should post your question in this thread. I know that a few people there have decorated shoes to go with outfits.

I wore Keds with my wedding dress. It was nearly 16 years ago (sheesh, where did the time go?), but I used pretty fabric embellishments that I found at Joann Fabrics and glued them on.

I think the new i-Rock would work on canvas sneakers, and then you could use it in your scrapbooks too!

Why does this not surprise me about you! You're great! (DH is so much taller than I am - my wedding shoes had incredibly high heels to help even things out a tiny bit - but amazingly, they were comfortable!) I would have looked like one of Snow White's dwarfs in flat sneakers! :rotfl2: (Yup, Dopey!)

Good move - OP! I'm just back from WDW and I'm always amazed at how many parents have their kids tripping around in those crappy plastic heels! :sad2: I can't help but wonder how many twist their ankles and/or slip on the pavements in those...

Your niece will love her cute comfy shoes!

I've done similar projects over the years (and the new I Rock seems like a good idea) but I've also had good luck with a fabric adhesive. I use Fabri-Tac (by Beacon Adhesives) - crystal clear and strong and available in the glue department at any ACMoore, Michaels, etc.

I wear Keds about 95% of the time so it made sense. I love them :) I sent pictures to Keds after the wedding, no response...

My D is only about an inch and a half taller than me, on a really good day, so I knew flats would be fine. They also matched my "going away outfit."

Thank you all so much for the ideas! I loved the tutorial & I think I am going to use her spray glitter techniques to make sure the fabric is covered. Then I've got to get me one of those IROCKS! I goggled Irock craft and found a YouTube tutorial. They sell stencils, flowers, and all kinds of goodies to jazz up shoes. I might have to go into business LOL.

I'm waiting for Disney store to drop prices on Tinker Bell and Belle costumes before I snag those. We are treating here and my boys to the Pirate League and Bippity Boppity Boutique while we are down there, so I will probably make some pink and black empress shoes since I'm 99% sure she'll go that way. I have no clue what she'll chose at BBB. She is all over the map with her princesses:). The boys are actually really excited about the knight package. My oldest is 11 and he has been insisting for years they needed a knight or prince package or training because he is just NOT a pirate. My youngest loves role play/dress up of any kind as long as he gets a cool hat or weapon out of the deal. He is really excited about going (hopefully) inside the castle to CRT. We have not taken him b/c we were not sure he'd want to go, but this time he is insisting he wants to do it.

This is gonna be so much fun & so different! Thanks again for the help! I'm sure I'll need more before March.

Went to Michaels w/a 50% off coupon and got my IRock! Going back today w/another coupon to get some bling. Thanks again!

Sure thing! I had to order the plain canvas keds online because apparently nobody carries them around here any more! I tried Famous Footwear, Kohls, JCPenneys, and all they had was blinged out Sketchers or leather uppers. I must be way old school LOL. I'm really looking forward to this. This kind of attention to detail, nitpicky project is right up my alley. My talents are pretty much wasted on my boys LOL. They are just not high strung enough haha.

I jazzed up some keds for my daughter when she was little! Probably 14 to 15 years ago now, but they still look cute in pictures! I used Scribbles fabric paint...the plain kind and the sparkly kind. They came out very cute!

Also, we have jazzed up many, many figure skating dresses over the years. We used Swarovski crystals, but for keds I am sure that the less expensive (plastic) rhinestones would be fine. We use Gem-Tac...it is very good! The crystals were very stuck...even when we would wash the dresses.

Have fun!
