I just read this on the I love Camping at Fort Wilderness FB page. Can anyone confirm this?

* must go no faster than 20 MPH
* No gas powered carts
* No lifted carts
* No off road tires
* 4 Seater carts only
* Must fit in the Small Club cart ...description

These changes were made effective 11/12/2009 due to the recent accident on property where a 4 yr old was severly injured (& is still in a local hospital). Happy camping!

I kinda doubt this. Most of the private carts are lifted. The thing that makes me leary is the 4 seater cart only. Why would it matter how many seats? What if you are just 2? You have to have a back seat anyway?

I dont WANT a backseat!!!!!! Dont make me start WHININ' & CRYIN'!!!!

I just talked with the FW front desk 1-407-824-2727

No new rules. Same as the rules we received in Oct.

The cart must approved by FW. So if you have something crazy you may be asked to park it.

Here is a picture of the cart that rolled.

He didn't have anything crazy.

These new"rules" would make every rental cart fail the "rules". All of the tires on all of the rental carts are not DOT approved. That means for off-road use only. Go look at the tires on your car or truck there is a DOT stamping on them.

Someone is just "Wishing" and started this rumor

The heck he didnt...THE DRIVER was crazy......he was a freakin LOON!!!!! The night before the accident, they were all SMASHED drunk and drove the cart right up to the bathroom door at the pool...it had to be 1 am and the stereo was BLARING some FOREIGNER tune(Cold As Ice, I believe)...and then, NOBODY even jumped off to go to the bathroom!!!! Drove UP TO THE DOOR of the bathroom and didnt have to use it!!!!! Yelling and stupid...they were an accident waiting to happen....Ive never heard the details on what actually happened to the little girl...but Im assuming it was a head injury for her to STILL be hospitalized....poor kid, I hope she recovers well and grows up big and strong and beats the crap out of her Dad while he's passed out drunk on the bathroom floor one night!!!

Rog: He did party hard all week didn't he.

Just ask seabee this guy was camping/drinking right behind there site in the 800 loop. His cart only had 2 speeds, wide open and sliding the tires to stop. He also hit 1 of the picnic tables at the pool. He thought that the sidewalks were his own personal race track and the the "one-way" and "do-not enter" signs didn't apply to him. When all of this happened Where was the Security patrol ? They were out yelling at guests for parking on one blade of grass and 2 pine needles,

And the Orlando paper said that alcohol wasn't involved. Those of us that were there know better.

Just talked to FW mgt and Recreation. As of right now, the new rules are:

No more ATV's - all carts must look like Golf carts
All carts must have enough seats for each person riding on the cart
Lifted carts will not be an issue, however, there will prob. be a height limit
As of now, gas carts are still allowed.

Not to be dierespectful,
BUT RULES DON'T MEAN CRAP WHEN THEY AREN'T ENFORCED !
I mean we all know what wonderful security Disney has.

Those sound like the same rules they gave us in OCT. Since you are still at the fort could you go to the outpost and ask for a New golf cart rules sheet, photo it and post it. I would like to compare it to the list they gave out last month, mine is dated 5/09

Thanks

I talked to 2 Cm's at the Fort this morning.both had a slightly different answer. I did not catch the first CM's name the second was Jason. The first guy said headlights and reflectors and nothing Crazy. Jason said head lights and tail lights and that the cart must approved by Them.

This would be a non issue if Security was paying attention & had done the right thing.

Just home today after almost 3 weeks at the Fort. We rented a cart off site - regulation Club Car. The guy we rented from (Kenny @ Tee Time) seemed to be aware of the 20 mph max rule but then again the entire Fort is posted at 20 mph anyway.

At no time during our stay (we arrived right after the first accident on Halloween) did we or our friends (with 3 other rented carts) get any info from Fort Mgt about a change in cart rules.

Loads of carts everywhere - including a pretty big percentage of personal carts of all shapes and sizes and heights (incl. a few that were louder than cars!)

Can't imagine how Disney might handle precluding folks from bringing their own "non standard" carts when they're not even enforcing the cart rules they have now. We were at the dog park one day and 2 preteens in a Disney cart came buzzing out from the grassy area behind the end of the dog walk - in broad daylight - and into the road. They waved as they drove by. :confused3

IMHO, the cart situation at the Fort has gotten out of hand, and I think changes need to happen. Lifted carts and modded carts don't bother me. If I had a cart it would probably be lifted and fast too. But I have a huge problem with yahoos driving like idiots. There needs to be some serious fines imposed on speeding, unsafe operation, and underage driving.

When I was at the GG in Oct, I had to keep my head a swivel when out with my little girls. There were even kids riding motorcycle scooters around our loop. I have never known FW to allow any type of motorcycle unless it is just being driven from the gate to the campsite and vice versa. Maybe I just need to take my CRF450 on our next trip and rip around the place. I'll fit right in.

Glad to hear gas carts are still allowed. I would hate to have to buy an electric to only use at the fort (Haven't found another use for one).
I do agree that things have gotten out of hand with the idiots and the scooters. I have been to other campgrounds a lot smaller than the fort and they have a security person who's job is to police the cart traffic. I would think that Disney would have a person somewhere that would love to get paid to ride around all day and bust idiots.

Just got home last night from the Fort. We saw several young children driving Disney carts. One little girl driving by herself wasn't much older than my DD6- I would say she was 7 or 8. We saw her drop her mom off at the comfort station and then drive away. :confused3 There were also two little boys about 9 or 10 driving top speed the wrong way around the loop.

I inquired on FB about where this person got their information from and this was her reply:

"I live in Fl & am an annual passholder. It was sent out in the annual passholder info packet on the 19th. You can also get the same info by calling the bike barn at Ft. Wilderness 407-824-2742. I understand they are passing out all this info to guest when they check in.

Those are the same parents who werent smart enough to use birth control.

Some people REALLY shouldn't have kids.

:sad2:

After I retired I was a PT Starter, for a South Central PA, golf course. The course I worked for was real hilly for 9 holes. The other 9 was flat. The tire tread and brake system on these carts were at best minimal, but if common sence came into play, incidents would be rare.

As I sent golfers off to #1, I would warn them to ride the brake going down to #1 and exercise extreme caution with speed on 1 through 5. Again, ride the brake going down hill.

I lost count on #1 hearing a screech and boom, after just telling them to ride the brake going to 1. We also experienced a few rollovers during the year.

Golf carts are neat, but they are to be respected.
