It lives in the shallows of lakes and ponds, but as I posted I do agree its not the main reason they closed RC. Though not having CM's to patrol is a side benefit.
If you listen to the Podcast here they always close the show with this warning. "Stay out of the dam lakes".
I apologize for the way I responded I didn't want to dismiss the bacteria issue completely and I definitely worded it wrong. There is the existence of bacteria without any doubt. However it is not to the point that Disney has shut down Bay Lake completely.
I believe that the reason for the shut down and curtailed areas is alligator and very real economics of Disney.
But yes, I would like not only to agree, but to add to the previous writer, Yes Bacteria is there and if you should choose to swim or bathe, take a good shower after and don't swallow or inhale. That's the only way I would go in.
