hey everyone. So quick question cause I haven't flown in a number of months. My DH's drivers license expires like two weeks before our trip and of course he has waited to get it renewed. For the new federal DLs they gave me a temp until mine came in the mail. Is TSA accepting these temps or will we have to have the new DL rushed? No worries if you aren't sure. Just wanted to check. Thanks!!!

Not sure, but my real ID came in less than 10 business days here in WV. We applied a month before the expiration because we were cruising and needed the hard copy. Good luck.

He should get his new license with in 14 days of applying, that's how long the piece of paper they give you is good for usually.

As long as he has his old expired ID and that piece of paper (given it hasn't expired) he should be good.

I had to get 5 drivers license last year (was getting CDLs) and the longest one took 17 days to mail, but they anticipated that and gave me a printed copy that was valid for 21 days.

His old expired license is an acceptable form of ID for TSA. I think they will take an expired license for up to 6 months, it may even be a year. My DBF travels weekly for work and doesn't have a vehicle or drive. He traveled for 3 months with an expired license before he finally got it renewed. The rental car agencies won't take expired IDs or paper IDs though, in our experience.

When we applied for the new ID and they gave us a temp one while we waited, they took our old IDs away. Not sure if the OP's state does it like that, but here in WV we only had the temp for under 2 weeks. We were able to renew a month before the expiration date, so that helped.

Oh 10 days is good!! I'm in WV too :wave2: and it took me a solid 14 days so I was worried. They took my old one as well, and I was worried about the temp. Now he's thinking he'll just opt for the older style for now and then go back for a real ID when we get back. So many trips to the DMV!

Thank you! I didn't think about asking the DMV if maybe he could keep the old one or if they could print him something else to take just in case.

Thank you! That is good to know. I didn't realize that the expired license would be OK for a little while.

There is the alternative no/forgotten/lost id method that isn't going away when the realid becomes a requirement. If there is a problem, he just needs to be nice and request the forgotten id method of validation. (they may just tell him to pass, ask him to fill a form with info to try to verify who he is, and/or do a full search first).
