New DVC owner in need of help

You guys have been wonderful at helping me understand DVC before I purchased at SSR.
Now, I need help understanding the whole renting and transferring points thing and how it works.
Since we had received 2005 pts with our recent purchase, we had scheduled a trip to WDW for the first week in May and decided to take our elderly parents.
We booked two 1 br villas at BW for 198 pts each (used all of 300 pts for 2005 and 96 pts from 2006).
Today, I had to cancel our parents' res. because my mom is ill (heart problems) and won't be able to travel (as per doctor's orders).
Besides being heartbroken for her (she had never been to WDW and always wanted to go), I am faced with the reality of losing, not only the airfare for them, but our precious pts too.
I placed a "For Rent" post here and on another board but what other options do I have (if I have any)?
Also, if I rent them, do I have to make the buyer's reservation?
Can I transfer the points to another DVC member and I do I do that? If I transfer the points, do I request payment before the transfer?
Sorry I'm so confused about this and thanks in advance for your help!

Call MS tomorrow and explain the situation. It can't hurt. I suppose you are less than 30 days out? What is your UY?

I hope that you and your mom will still get to WDW together sometime soon...

I called MS today and was told that it was too late to do anything about my cancelled reservation since my user yr is June 2006. I had 198 pts on that second reservation and, after explaining everything, they agreed to "try" to place my 96 borrowed pts back in my account. The 102 pts for this yr have to be used or lost by June 1.

I had the opposite happen. My mom passed away in late September and I cancelled a late November reservation. Holding wasn't involved since it was over 30 days but they allowed me to bank the current year points but would not do anything with the borrowed points, they had to be used by the end of my use year (March 31). I ended up using them in early February.

Hope someone will respone to your rent posts. Good luck, I would hate to lose points.
