New DVC Locations

My source has been telling me to hold on to my shorts because we are going to see a real growth in DVC locations over the next decade (my posts here earlier). I just pulled this interesting tidbit from another "site which must not be named" (apologies to Harry Potter fans):

While no new hotels are planned there are several proposals, all in early stages of course, for Disneyland Paris to get its own DVC units. There are even proposals planned for DVC units in other parts of Europe, but that's a different story for another day(stay tuned for posts on that!). Don't expect to see any of these until the end of this decade at the earliest... although one Bothan expects the openings to correspond to the 20th anniversary if plans go well and the European economy doesn't tank.

It's pretty well known that DVC is constantly looking at other sites to build DVC units. What percentage of these ever get past the 'proposal', or a 'planning' stage is unknown.

In the past they have actually announced DVC units, but eventually never built them. Examples include Eagle Pines, and New York City. It's also a fact that they seriously considered California (Marriott finally built at the location), and Colorado.

For Eagle Pines they even released the artist's concept drawing.

A 'proposal' is nothing more than DVC's way of saying "Let's just take a look at this site". I wouldn't put a lot of stock in it as being firm in any way.

About the only 2 rumored sites that have any steam at this point are The Contemporary and Hawaii.

Thanks for the post. For some reason I found this last bit amusing. I'd be worrying about the dollar collapsing vs the euro a lot more than I'd worry about a tanking European economy. I can't fathom what a European resort is going to cost in USD anytime soon.

PS - What's a Bothan (unless it's a Star Wars reference, and then I'm really confused).

I absolutely agree with you! However, I am starting to raise my eye brows on these rumors lately. It seems to fit in with Iger's strategy. We shall see.

DLP DVC is going to happen, I just feel it fits in with the overall plan for expansion.

To me, DVCs at the various international theme parks make more sense than stand-alone resorts like they just announced at Ko Olina, HI. I keep having flashbacks to VB and HHI! Not the resorts themselves, but the sales failures.

The Ko Olina property is apparently going to be a combination of great hotel and DVC (I'm guessing Disney's Grand Hawaiian), so that does make it somewhat different from VB and HHI.

However, if you look at DLP, Hong Kong, Tokyo, et al, it seems to me the possibilities are much greater. We think of those venues in terms of US going over there, but think of the marketing possibilities for someone to enjoy DVC near their home overseas, and then every 3-4 years book at seven months at WDW! That is a huge market expansion from a DVC which to date has been 98% about Orlando.

Here is the rest of the article.

Maybe thats why they are pushing the Adventures by Disney. Sort of a unofficial Survey of where DVC members want to go.

If they did one in Ireland then I'd go, but France? Non monsieur.

Still I find myself getting twitchy with the offsite expansion. It's bad enough when Orlando DVCers compete or even free upgraders compete, but then toss in 400+ from Hawaii, several hundred more around the world and you get a 7 month nightmare. Unless they consider changing the system to give non-site owners less time to book, say 5 mos.

Being an East Coaster, I'm not that hot about Hawaii. It's pretty but it's just too far away. The Caribbean is an easier sale for me and even then I go sparingly. Europe is at best an every other year trip. It's outrageously expensive over there.

Basically we run into the problem of not a lot of Orlando DVCers regularly trading out to go elsewhere but you can bet a lot of nonsite owners will want to trade in just for the destination. I wonder how it will all pan out.

I don't think so.

2 years ago I took a tour of a Marriot timeshare outside DLP, it was very nice but once the salesman heard we were DVC members he gave up on selling to me and concentrated on my friends. During the conversation he mentioned that as part of the lease or purchase of the Land(from Disney) there was a condition that no other Timeshare would be built in the vicinity.

I can't wait to see how all of this unfolds. DVC at DL will sell out very fast, in my opinion. If Hawaii is not going to open until 2011, when will the DVC units go on sale at the resort? How many units will there be? CRV is still out there and I am still positive the new tower will be mixed use. AKV lead the way, now there is California and Hawaii being annoubced as mixed use. I think its a given that this is the approach Disney is taking with future units. All this growth of DVC is very positive, at least to us.

We really like that DVC is giving us more options and value to our ownership. I am curious to see how much the off-site additions will affect the on-site reservations. I am guessing not to much, especially since the older memberships will welcome a change of pace to break up the tenth year in a row to WDW. Time will tell!

Being we're all Disney fans, we're allowed to dream, right;)

You know, I was thinking yesterday which DVC resorts are going to replace the "rumored" and now "confirmed" resorts.

I mean for the longest time it has been AKV, CRV, GCV, and Hawaii. Now 3 of those have been confirmed and CRV has some pretty strong documentation indicating that it will take shape in some form or another.

So, what will be the next "big" rumored DVC resorts/locations?
Sounds like Paris is one...

Oh, and for those who are skeptical about Hawaii, just remember it won't be all DVC. With GCV and DVC Hawaii taking that approach, I'm wondering if we won't start seeing more of this concept (even with CRV, etc...)... time will tell.

And when Marriott is sold out? I doubt there is a forever non-compete...which I know in the US is illegal. Can't say for sure about EU laws.
