New DVC GC Owner

We are currently in the process of purchasing our first DVC property. We will close on approx. Dec 18. We have purchased Aug as our use month, the 7 month window for Aug will open Jan 1, I don't know with the holidays if we will have our membership number from Disney by that date. What are our chances of getting a reservation for Aug? If we can't, do we have to wait until Feb 1 to try for Sept?

If you're booking your home resort you have eleven months, not seven, ahead of arrival dates. If you're booking somewhere else, then yes you would need to wait until seven months from the date of arrival to book there. Availability inside seven months is a crapshoot, and it isn't possible to reliably predict at any high-demand DVC resort.

I understand it's 11 months, but this one time since we are new buyers and will not get our membership packet from Disney until after the 7th month when the GC opens to everyone else I was wondering the availability. If I can't get August dates can I book September at my home resort before the 7th month window since technically have August. I know this is confusing, sorry.

When making reservations disregard your use year, the use year has nothing to do with when you can make reservations. The use year only is involved with what points are available to use. So as soon as you get your member info you can book your home resort up to 11 months out, and other resorts up to 7 months out. Your use year is not involved in that calculation at all. Does this help? If not, I will try again.

I think I got it, I can book as early as 11 months out from whenever I want to stay at my home resort not just August. Say I want to go sometime in March I can can book the April prior. I just get my points every year in August?

Correct on the 11 months part.

Technically you already have all your points thru the end of the contract and it's just a matter of what points you can use - not exactly that you get your points every August.

A couple of examples: For a Sept 2014 reservation with an Aug UY you can use Banked 2013 points, current 2014 points and borrowed 2015 points. You could have done the booking for your home resort in Oct of 2013.

If you were making a reservation for July 2014 you could use banked 2012 points, current 2013 points and borrowed 2014 points and if booking at your home resort you could have booked your July reservation in Aug 2013.

Thanks everyone, I was a little confused.

We are expecting to close on Dec 18, we will be getting 115 points from 2013. My husband and I want to just get away for a few days at the end of Summer next year and enjoy our first stay at GC, I was just worried if we didn't get our membership info until after January 1 when the 7th month window opened for August for other resort owners.

No worries now, if I can't get in than I am sure I will be able to book something in September or October knowing I will beat the 7 month window for those months.

After this trip I will make sure we schedule and book our future stays at the 11 month date.
