There's a new restaurant in DLR DTD and it's called Tortilla Jo's. It occupies the same spot that Ariba Ariba was in and it is operated by the Padilla Group. They also own and operate Catal and Naples Pizzeria in DTD.

We really wanted to like Tortilla Jo's. My family really enjoys Mexican Food and good restaurants in DTD have been lacking. (Ralph Brennan's, Catal, Naples, House of Blues have good atmosphere but the food is only so so and it's pretty expensive.)

Alas, Torilla Jo's is "Tortilla No's".

The decor of the restaurant is nice and the host/hostess staff was very quick and got us seated right away. The waiter seemed to be a little flustered, but we attributed this to the fact that the restaurant has only been open a week.
The chips and salsa were good, but they give you just a little tiny bit of salsa and a whole lot of chips. We ordered 2 Cokes and 2 lemonades.
We started out with Tortilla Soup and Nacho's. I had to send the Tortilla Soup back. It was terrible. The tortilla soup that I'm used to usually has some variation of vegetables, chicken, tortilla strips and somtimes cheese in a clear broth. This version was a thick, mustard colored puree. There was nothing in it, only the puree. Our waiter, from Mexico, even let slip that he had never seen it done like this either. The nacho's were alright. Nothing special. Del Taco has better nachos, literally. They smothered the chips in a mole sauce but it only made them limp and too spicy.

On to lunch, which at Tortilla Jo's is the same price as dinner. I had the chicken fajitas and my wife had the fish tacos with beans and rice. Our little girls had a bean burrito and a taco off the kids menu. ($6.95 each, no drink included.)

Chicken Fajitas - This was okay...again, nothing special. They brought me two (2) flour tortillas. The tortilla's were hard, you know, like when they're microwaved. I went through the 2 hard tortillas and asked the waiter for some more. He asked me how many more I wanted and I said "oh, give me about 6 more." He brought me 3 little containers with 2 tortillas each in them. Later on, when we received the bill, I saw that he had charged me $1.95 each for the three containers of tortillas.

Fish taco's - terrible. The fish was soft and "squishy". It had a real fishy taste, too. Again, the beans and rice are very bland and average.

The girls kids meals were okay, but at $6.95, I considered them to be way over priced.
The soda's are $3.50 each (including the kid's drinks) and we never got any refills. (Even though we asked for them a couple of times.) Our total bill before tip was almost $70 and all we had were 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 kids meals. We paid $14 for 2 Cokes and 2 kid's lemonades. This is WAY to expensive for a lunch at an "El Torito" type restaurant.

Overall, for a restaurant that we really wanted to like, we were very disappointed. We won't be going back and I can't recommend it as a dining stop.

Oh I am so sad to hear that! I also was hoping to like it when we went as I really liked Ariba Ariba and was glad to hear they were putting in another mexican place. I also don't like Rancho Del Zocalo so I guess I am stuck with the fast food one (?) at DCA. Thanks for the review. I don't complain much but I have to say I would have never paid for those tortillas. I always ask for extra as I don't like to overstuff things, I prefer more and smaller. You are a better person than I. Thanks again.

Oh my heck $7 for a kids meal, thanks for the info needless to say we won't be going next week.

Thanks for the review. I think I will still try it since I heard a positive review elsewhere.

<font color=navy>I hope you left your comments with the restaurant manager so they can work on improving the restaurant before it's official opening.

I've heard pro's and cons about the restaurant, and mostly good stuff about the taqueria. I still want to try it for myself and see how the food is.

I'm glad they finally opened a Mex restaurant in Downtown Disney & really want this one to succeed. :)

Probably anyone from California or the Southwest, where authentic Mexican food is readily available, will be disappointed with Tortilla Jo's. I rarely go to a huge chain restaurant because I know I can go to Tom's Tacos in Anaheim or Al and Bea's Burrito Stand in Boyle Heights and get good Mexican food. That said it is disappointing to hear a bad review...when we try it out we won't have any expectations of good food.....I will be happy if they have an outside bar....

We really wanted to like this restaurant. DTD needs a good mexican restaurant.
It wasn't even the quality of the food so much...it was the taste and the prices.
$70 for 2 people and 2 children for lunch with no alcohol is too much IMHO. They need a lunch menu. I bet they'll put one in at some point.

I would have loved to have given this restaurant a great review. It kind of ground me down in steps. First, the soup. Then, the no refills. Then, the small amount of salsa. Then, the bland fajitas and the squishy fish taco's. Then, the bill came and I was taken aback. We paid $14 for 2 Cokes and 2 lemonades! As my father-in-law says, "I don't want THE Coke, I want A Coke." Oh well, at least Jamba Juice is good!

BTW - We did leave a comment card at the register listing what we thought of our experience. I will be looking forward to anyone else who has tried Tortilla Jo's to post on the board. Maybe, we hit them on a bad day.

Holy Smokes!!!

3.50 for a coke is insane!! and 6.95 for a kids meal!!!! WOW!!!

Sorry to hear it didn't live up to expectations. I was looking forward to trying it on my next trip. Maybe they will make some improvements by then.
