There's a new restaurant in DLR DTD and it's called Tortilla Jo's. It occupies the same spot that Ariba Ariba was in and it is operated by the Padilla Group. They also own and operate Catal and Naples Pizzeria in DTD.
We really wanted to like Tortilla Jo's. My family really enjoys Mexican Food and good restaurants in DTD have been lacking. (Ralph Brennan's, Catal, Naples, House of Blues have good atmosphere but the food is only so so and it's pretty expensive.)
Alas, Torilla Jo's is "Tortilla No's".
The decor of the restaurant is nice and the host/hostess staff was very quick and got us seated right away. The waiter seemed to be a little flustered, but we attributed this to the fact that the restaurant has only been open a week.
The chips and salsa were good, but they give you just a little tiny bit of salsa and a whole lot of chips. We ordered 2 Cokes and 2 lemonades.
We started out with Tortilla Soup and Nacho's. I had to send the Tortilla Soup back. It was terrible. The tortilla soup that I'm used to usually has some variation of vegetables, chicken, tortilla strips and somtimes cheese in a clear broth. This version was a thick, mustard colored puree. There was nothing in it, only the puree. Our waiter, from Mexico, even let slip that he had never seen it done like this either. The nacho's were alright. Nothing special. Del Taco has better nachos, literally. They smothered the chips in a mole sauce but it only made them limp and too spicy.
On to lunch, which at Tortilla Jo's is the same price as dinner. I had the chicken fajitas and my wife had the fish tacos with beans and rice. Our little girls had a bean burrito and a taco off the kids menu. ($6.95 each, no drink included.)
Chicken Fajitas - This was okay...again, nothing special. They brought me two (2) flour tortillas. The tortilla's were hard, you know, like when they're microwaved. I went through the 2 hard tortillas and asked the waiter for some more. He asked me how many more I wanted and I said "oh, give me about 6 more." He brought me 3 little containers with 2 tortillas each in them. Later on, when we received the bill, I saw that he had charged me $1.95 each for the three containers of tortillas.
Fish taco's - terrible. The fish was soft and "squishy". It had a real fishy taste, too. Again, the beans and rice are very bland and average.
The girls kids meals were okay, but at $6.95, I considered them to be way over priced.
The soda's are $3.50 each (including the kid's drinks) and we never got any refills. (Even though we asked for them a couple of times.) Our total bill before tip was almost $70 and all we had were 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 kids meals. We paid $14 for 2 Cokes and 2 kid's lemonades. This is WAY to expensive for a lunch at an "El Torito" type restaurant.
Overall, for a restaurant that we really wanted to like, we were very disappointed. We won't be going back and I can't recommend it as a dining stop.
