There have been numerous rumors over the years about Disney buying land in various parts or Texas. At one time, a student in Texas even had a Web site tracking the various rumors. I think somebody on this board once wrote that if all the rumors were true, Disney would own the whole state of Texas by now.
The current philosophy of The Walt Disney Company seems to be that the Disney theme park business in the United States is mature, and that the real growth opportunities are overseas. But there's always a possibility that that view will change some day, or that Disney will surprise us.
If Disney ever decides that a third Disney resort complex in United Staes is a viable business proposition, then Texas would be a logical choice. Texas will have a population of close to 25 million by 2010, and that population will continue to grow. There are parts of Texas where the climate is really no worse than Orlando. With Disney currently in the East and in the West, Texas represents the middle of the country. Also Texas is a good location from which to serve visitors from Mexico.
If Disney ever actually buys land in Texas, it won't be a secret very long. It will be on the front pages of newspapers, just as Disney's America in Virginia was big news. Disney would undoubtedly ask for all sorts of special legislation and tax breaks after acquiring land (or options on land), before proceeding with anything like a Texas
Disneyland Resort.
