New Delta policy on emotional support animals (hotel policy connection)

I saw this article and I was thinking about the new dog-friendly resort policy. According to Delta, "animal incidents" were increased by 84%;

For me this article made a connection to me in terms of the concern that a person can get bit by a dog in a hotel friendly resort.

Comfort turkeys and gliding possums? Yikes! I'm glad Delta is cracking down on the support animal situation. It's really out of control. Last weekend, there were more dogs at EPCOT than at our dog-friendly resort, POR. The 2 dogs I saw at the resort were clearly pets, not service or support animals, but well-behaved and controlled by their owners. Unfortunately, many of the dogs at EPCOT seemed to be controlling the leash, rather than the owner. I counted 9 dogs in WS area. One woman had 2 large dogs with red "service animal" vests, but the dogs were wrapping themselves around posts and trees, running into shrubbery, and sniffing everything. I like dogs, but they made me nervous. I'd like to see Disney adopt Delta's policy if people take emotional support animals into the parks.

I love, love Delta, but it took a few incidents for them to enforce a reasonable policy regarding support animals. Sadly, it's going to take a few incidents for Disney to also enforce a reasonable policy. More than just dogs annoying guests with barking, poop in areas, and making some guests uncomfortable.

only problem I see is everything that is required can with enough time be bought on line so other than making people get ahead of time what is it going to stop as far as dogs and cats

I’m sorry but I feel people who take advantage give responsible pet owners a bad name and make it harder on people who actually need the support animal!

I used to fly with my dog all the time, pay the fee each way (25 when I started 100 now). Leave him in the carrier and follow all the rules. It would drive me crazy when friends would say just get him a support animal tag and save your self the money. Really you're making it harder on people who need the actual support, and you’re giving responsible people a bad rap. Ugh sorry it just makes me so mad what people will do to save money, and inconvenience others!

I am curious. If you have a need for a therapy animal does a DR./therapist give you like a written prescription of what the animal needs to be able to do? Following my reasoning, you would then contact an organization that trains the animal to provide the service right? It's not like you get a Dr. note/prescription and go to the nearest pet store or animal rescue. You would have paper work or some kind of receipt from where you obtained the animal. Logically requiring proof of where you obtained the animal should weed out the abusers.

I just cannot believe anybody on earth has a “comfort turkey” unless it was a cooked roast.

I’m scared senseless of large birds. I could not fly with a living, breathing turkey or other fowl. Do people even keep them as pets? Ick!

There is NO TRAINING required for an Emotional Support Animal. You can get a Drs note and go to the nearest pet store, animal rescue. It is the new college student fad and out of control

Our local farmers market used to allow all kinds of dogs etc - until too many irresponsible owners who thought their animal could do no wrong came and they had to crack down. Now to be allowed to bring your dog in it must go through an approved training course, be tested, and then pay to to get a special bandanna for the animal to wear to show they've met the strict requirements. All told it is a couple hundred bucks to bring a dog now.
Disney and airlines need to do something similar. Those who truly need the support animal are closely worked with and matched with their animal. It is VERY clear who is a trained animal and who is not. And they would already have paperwork to show that.

As for birds-well we have chickens including one I call our "cuddle" chicken who loves to be held. In fact I credit her with decreasing my son's anxiety before school (he holds and pets her daily before school). In no way would I ever consider bringing her anywhere though. I would consider that animal abuse!

Unless able to be trained and conditioned most animals will show anxiety at being away from home base. What owners mistake for "excitement" is actually anxiety.

Ugh and see this is also part of the problem! Who are these doctors? Why are they just writing these notes, I do not believe for one minute these doctors all actually believe that all these people need emotional support animals! Yes some people really do need them, but I’m pretty sure if i wanted a note I could have one by the end of the week, and I don’t need one!

Sorry I feel like I’m kind of going on a bit of a rant on this thread!

Thanks, but no thanks.

Next time I fly, I’m going to look in the rows and make sure all the other passengers are human or normal pet animals like dogs and cats. I have no desire to fly with someone’s support goose.

The article pertains to airlines, not resorts, and we just had some multi-thousand-post-threads of debate and argument on emotional vs service dogs. This thread is closed.
