New Cruise Ships

At this juncture both ships remain unnamed, at least as far as the public knows. Both will be built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany and are due for delivery in 2011 and 2012. Exact dates are not yet available. They will be homeported at Port Canaveral with Disney Magic and Disney Wonder moving on to new unnamed locales.

Anyone have any info on the new ships. I haven't heard anything in a while
Back on April 23, 2007, Disney Cruise Line announced a contract with wit German shipbuilder Meyer Werft for two new ships. Here's the press release: http://dclnews.com/viewpressrelease.aspx?pressreleaseid=106562

The main news was that the two new ships would be much larger than the two existing ships. Artwork showed that the new ships would continue the classic ocean liner styling of the existing ships.

The Disney Cruise Line Flag was raised at Meyer Werft in September 2007. See http://conservation.wdwpublicaffair...playItem=886045ab-e492-4782-a637-22fdd2fad002

The new ships will be homeported at Port Canaveral, where Disney's terminal will be expanded to handle the larger ships. See "Canaveral, Disney Cruise Line Reach Agreement" at http://www.portcanaveral.org/general/news/releases/031908.php.

Since then, there's been very little news.

I really wouldn't expect any big news about the new ships -- such as innovative onboard features or descriptions and names of the ships' new dining rooms -- until Disney gets close to the point of taking bookings. At that time, Disney is likely to turn on the publicity tap and flood us with enticing details.

I think Pete and the podcast gang stated a rumor(or opinion) that the new ships would be the Disney Dream(s) and the Disney Wish(es)

No word on a contest to name them yet?
I doubt they'll have a contest. My guess is that DCL management knows exactly what the names will be, but, at this time, it makes business sense to stay quiet. It's too early to get people excited about the new ships. In fact, doing so could hurt bookings for the current ships.

When it gets closer to the time that DCL wants your credit card deposit for a stateroom on one of the new ships, you can expect free DVDs, fancy website content, and all sorts of other publicity. (The names will probably be revealed before the major publicity starts, but not too far in advance.)

That's been the rumor since years before the new ships were even announced. Those names are logical, but DCL officials have been mum on the subject (and I don't consider the servers on the ships to be DCL officials, nor do the servers have inside knowledge).

I checked the shipyard's website a month back and noticed that the keel laying was not until March 2009, so I guess that haven't done a thing. Hopefully, they've ordered steel!:cool1:

I hope that they continue to offer cruises to the Mexican Riviera, or maybe even new ones to Hawaii (how about taking a cruise to the new DVC resort when it opens?) Alaska (I heard that they already filed paperwork with the government to allow licensing for Alaskan Cruises). I love the cruises, but hate flying clear across the country in order to get to the ships. Relocating a ship to the West Coast would be ideal for my family, and I assume many others like us.

Two in the east, One on the west, one in europe?

I would guess that the West Coast is almost for certain since when the Disney Magic was out there, they did very well. Now whether the ship spends the summer operating out of Seattle/Vancouver to Alaska and then the winter doing the Mexican Rivera or whether it just remains in L.A./Long Beach year round remains to be seen.

But you know what......we're all just speculating. Anyone who knows isn't talking and the decisions will very much depend on anticipated demand, fuel costs, $ vs € vs £ ratios, and a lot of other factors that will be taken into account closer to sailing dates.

Don't think Disney cruises to Alaska will not be happenning...Disney has withdrawn their application for a Glacier Bay permit.

We already have a Norwegian Dream and a Carnival Celebration.
I'm predicting something much more original by Disney.

Disney doesn't do anything original anymore. They'll just slap the buzzword of the moment on there.

If they could name them the Disney Hannah Montana and the Disney Jonas Brothers, they would.

Do you think that they might consider re-applying again in the future?

Is it a matter of waiting things out and hoping the economy improves? Or is it due to the wait for the new ships to be finished up. )They'd probably have to reconfigure a ship for the journey north as well, considering an open air veranda may not be such a hot seller in Alaska...)

I hope a ship gets put on the West coast. They'll probably give us either the magic or the wonder.

The new ships are to be based in Port Canaveral. Disney hasn't said where the Magic and Wonder will be based but I bet one of them goes West.
