New Credit Card Hold Policy

I am curious too... This year, I was planning on buying gifts cards to use towards our purchases..we usually use our debit card for charges and I would hate for them place a hold on our debit card because banks can take forever to release those funds.

That sounds great.

But what about leaving? What’s going to happen every night after illuminations let’s out.

The line for the skyline is going to be insane. Which will cause massive traffic jams all over the place since there is a natural choke point right there.

Use a credit card, and just pay the balance off every other night with the gift cards and the night before you leave. Also, make sure to get a print out of all your charges and payments. You can do this at the front desk of any resort with your magic band.

Or, leave no credit card and forego magic band charging. We usually just carry our GC and use it as we go. Perhaps not the smartest way as it’s like cash. But I have photos on my phone and and empty cards registered on the website to quickly transfer the balance as soon as we think the card is gone - although I’d rate the likelihood of my wife loosing it at about a million to one. When we have used the MB’s as suggested I have stopped by the desk and zeroed the balance with the GC. I’m not big on debit cards (no offense to those who are) but would certainly not put one down for a hold.

This is actually a policy change I am in favor of (lately that feels weird to write.) It should not affect anybody except for those who are maxed out on their credit cards already, or those who plan on ditching their bill and running. In this case that would almost certainly be renters.

Not just renters, there are regular people that do things like that. Renters are a small percentage of guests at a resort.

Right, but as far as DVC is concerned, I'm pretty sure they could hold those missed payments against your contract, or something along those lines. This change was targeted at people who come to Disney once, overcharge a burner card, and then take off. 99% of those people in would guess are hotel guests.

Is this because the resorts are obviously about to go under and losing tons of money? :)

I think this is pretty standard at all resorts. Sometimes there's a mismatch in timing for when expenses hit the account, or charges made to the room after check-out. For example, you use your Magic Band to grab something to eat while waiting for the DME. If you don't spend the $100 in incidentals, you don't get charged.

In my case, due to issues in the past, my paycheck/account balances are firewalled from any sort of debit/ATM card. I don’t normally use credit and I have to move money from my paycheck account into my debit card account.

I only keep small amounts on the debit card.

My method of creating a firewall for my funds would not work in a system that hits up my card without my accounting for it in real-time.

I don’t WANT a system that hits up my card without my accounting for it in real-time. The whole POINT of how I’ve structured my accounts is designed to prevent just that.

So. I’ll just decline to leave a card from now on.

Any reason in particular you don't use a credit card? I would think for certain situations, this one as an example, a credit card would be a better choice than a debit card.

I don't really like credit cards, but I guess we will have to use one from now on... we usually pay cash or use our debit card for everything. I don't mind allowing them to hold a $100 for incidentals, but I don't feel comfortable with them authorizing my card multiple times during my stay.

I really don't see this as a big deal. I track charges to my room account on the mobile app. In the passed I requested a copy of my bill every other day.
I would like to be able to pay cash ($1000) up front. Charge against my credit with my credit card as a back up.

This policy is just to protect Disney from dead beats.

Agreed. It's for 'guests' that try to game the system in some way, trying to walk their last couple charges.

It sounds like you guys totally understand this new policy. I'm not quite getting it, but let me take a stab at it. So if I have a $500 balance in room charges, they will put a hold on my credit card for $600? But I can go to the front desk the night before checkout and pay off my balance with a gift card. The hold on the credit card will then be dropped. Basically, this is what I already do, but the difference is there will now be a hold on my credit card each time I charge. Do I have this right?

It sounds like daily they will place a hold for what you owe + $100. You can pay it down anytime you want, but they want to shield themselves against anyone running up a bill and bolting on that last day, hence the extra hold.
