To the OP re: a lens for below the 70mm range. This is something your definately going to need. The human eye see's in approximately a 50mm range, which when translated to digital is actually about 30mm (30mm x the 1.6 crop factor for canon = 48mm). So you already starting well into the telephoto range.
Someone already mentioned it, but you might be well suited to pick yourself up the kit lens (18-55mm) off ebay. It cheep enough that if you want to upgrade in a year or two to something better you wont lose much.
When I did an analysis of the pictures I took at Disney back in June the majority were taken between 18mm and 50mm. The breakdown was, 1392 pictures kept, 948 between 18 & 50 range. 390 of which were at 18mm which is more than I took of the focal lenghts combined between 70 & 300 range (which total 387). This actually tells me that I probably could use an even wider lens than 18mm.
However, like someone else posted: Your Methods May Vary.
