I have a basic Verizon cell phone. I'm thinking it might be nice to upgrade to one that I can receive my email. I don't really text much. These new phones are kind of foreign to me. I have no idea what to get. Any recommendations?

I recently switched over to Straight Talk, which is a prepaid phone through Walmart, but I bought it on Straight Talk's website. It's $30 per month and runs on Verizon's network if you buy a phone with a model number ending in "C" for CDMA (verizon's towers). I get 1000 minutes, 1000 texts and 30 mb of web access. More than I ever got direct with Verizon for the money.

I've had it less than a month, but I'm very happy so far.

I recently went from an LGeV3 to a Droid X...I get my email on it, check Facebook, could check here but I don't like it tht much for this board. :) Anyway...I went from a basic phone with no web access to a smart phone with everything access....I love it! :)

I was actually just looking at the Droid X or the Incredible on Verizon's website. Why don't you like it for this board?

My hubby and I have been researching this. I have read some reviews about not the best service but I could say the same with Verizon wireless. I have also read some that the phones are not well made. But, it seems as if they have added some new ones since the date of the reviews I have read. This switch would save us alot of money but I am nervous to lose my plan I have. If we don't like straight talk and I have to switch back to Verizon wireless, it will cost us alot more.

Which phone did you choose when you switched?

I use Verizon (only service that works well where I live)-- and upgraded recently to the IPhone. It may be "more phone" than what you want/need, but it is FANTASTIC!!! I am soo happy with my purchase/decision!

:cool1:

We have Blackberry's. I know they are catered toward the business minded people. I am a SAHM & LOVE my BB!! I'm on my 2nd one. My dh wants to try a new phone when it's time to upgrade. I think I'll stick w/ the BB though. Easy to get emails, easy to surf the web. I love the BB messenger.

I have a Samsung Fascinate (verizon) and i love it. Really big beautiful screen and it does everything I could need to do (email, web surfing FB, movies, kindle, music, great calendar). I thought I wanted the iphone when it came out, but I don't want to give up my android phone.

I would hold off on getting a Droid X or an Incredible for a couple weeks, unless you don't care about having the latest. I have a Droid X and love it, but the HTC Thunderbolt should be coming out in the next couple of weeks, which will be Verizon's first 4G phone. I really want the Motorola Bionic, but the latest news says that won't be out until July and DW is currently texting on a flip phone, so I don't think we can wait that long. If you really just want something for email, then you can get really good deals on Droid X. Costco is selling the Droid X for $50 if it is an upgrade.

When I was looking at the Droid X on Verizon's website last night, they wanted $150 for it, and that's with my discount for being due for a new phone. I don't have a Costco membership, but if I did, how does it work to buy a phone that's not through Verizon directly? And will they still service it?

What would the new Thunderbolt do that the Droid X doesn't? I guess I don't know what 4G is, and is that something that's only available in certain areas?

Just looked at Costco.com. It shows the Droid X for 9.99. Am I missing something?

I'm not really sure how it works, as I have not bought elsewhere before, but since there are very few Verizon own stores, I assume they would still service the phone. Check around the Internet, because Costco is not the only place I saw with this deal, and even if they are, it might be worth joining just for the discount. The Costco deal is suppose to end today, but the guy at Costco said that he expects the deal to be offered after today.

4G is Verizon's new network "fast" network, it's suppose to offer speeds approaching broadband. It is only in certain areas right now (cities) so depending on where you live, it might not matter to you. You can find more info at http://network4g.verizonwireless.com/#/4g-network-verizon-wireless

A friend told me he went to Verizon to get the new Iphone, but found out they won't service it, and he would have to go to an Apple store about 20 miles away. He decided not to get it.

What type of plan do you have with Verizon that you would lose if you switched? If you are on an old plan, I could see why you would hesitate to change.

I got the LG220C for free (reconditioned). It is fine and my service has been the same quality as when I had Verizon. DH has a verizon phone through work and everything is the same. I went with the free phone because I figured then I wouldn't be out anything if the service wasn't the same. The only lousy thing about my phone is that it is kinda difficult to text without a qwerty keyboard, although I don't text much anyway and the internet is kinda a pain to use, but it does work. I use it mostly for looking up a phone number when I'm out.

I plan on paying more for a better phone, but for a while, I'm just going to stay put with the free one to make sure I'm going to stick with the service.
