After reading through several posts here, I realize that I am nowhere near the place that most of you are at. A lot of posts seemed almost like a foreign language, but I'll post anyway:). I'm looking for a new camera. We have a canon dslr, takes good pics and I'm happy with it. But it will be too bulky for me to bring to WDW whole keeping track of three kids. I know a lot of people will just use their iPhone, but I'm a scrapbooker and want a step above a cameras phone. Any ideas, I am looking for something compact enough to fit into a small purses, not "too" pricey, and takes good pics. Any ideas???

Check out the Sony DSC-WX300. I bought this camera for my wife and it`s a great little camera. I shoot with a Canon DSLR but I tend to take more pics of stuff like buildings, landscapes and such. She wants more of the kids so I got her this camera and it really does a good job. It`s on Amazon right now for $229.00.

Sony RX100, IMO, is the perfect Disney "compact" camera

looks like a great camera but I dont think the OP was looking to spend over $500 on a new camera. She mentioned something not "too" pricey.

LOL... that's subjective. The Canon G1xM2 is $800. The Sony RX10 is $1300.
The Sony RX1 is $2800. The Nikon Coolpix A is $1100.

The RX100, original version, can now be found for under $500.
In my mind, that's not cheap, but it's not "tooooooooo pricey."
Especially for a dSLR owner, who is used to APS-C images, and may find themselves very disappointed in a budget point & shoot results.

For less than $400 you can buy a Sony NEX-3 with a 16-50mm power zoom that will easily fit in a small purse. It also sports an APS-C sensor so you'll get image quality on par with your Canon at a fraction of the size and weight.

Don't discount smartphone cameras. While they don't offer zoom, some offer a wider aperture, less noise and sharper lenses than run of the mill point and shoots. It really comes back to the features you want in a camera though.

That said... what kind of budget are you looking at? Pricey is a really, really subjective. To some of us pricey starts upwards of $1000. And what kind of features do you want besides compact?

Now for $399..

Don't know what OP meant by not "too pricey" but in my mind, the RX100 now fits that description. But what is "too pricey" is pretty subjective.

Agreed. Hard to tell without a $$ from the OP. Seems like a hell of a deal. My wife would kill me if i purchased another piece of photography equipment right now. Trying to save up all i can to make the jump to a newer DSLR.

My wife has killed me a few times over ;)

I do love my RX100, but truthfully, since I love my dSLR even more, I rarely use the RX100 anymore. It's my backup camera on weekends when I don't want to carry a full dSLR, it's also the camera I hand to other family members to use.

The last time I used it seriously, was on my last cruise when I didn't want to drag a full dSLR to the beach. It's a fantastic landscape camera.

I see that I'm definitely out of my league on this page. I was hoping to spend under $300. Although I would love to spend more, I'm already spending quite a bit on the trip to begin with.

I will mainly use the camera for kid shots. It would be good if it would have a sports setting as well. Although I usually take the dslr to any sporting events, and the kids school functions. Sometimes it is just too bulky.

I have a feeling I'm asking for too much considering the price range. I know the old saying, "you get what you pay for".

Thanks for all the advice:)

There are plenty of cameras under $300 that will deliver very nice pictures in good light. They will not touch a decent dSLR in performance. They will tend to be slower than your dSLR, they will not capture action as well, and they will not match a dSLR in low light.

Here is a good recent article about the best compact cameras under $500... a couple of the recommendations are under $300.

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-point-and-shoot-under-500/

For $300, they recommend the Panasonic LF1 and the Panasonix LX7.

Im not familiar with the LF1 but the LX7 is a nice little camera. I'd also add the Nikon P330 to that list.

Amazon has Panasonic's GF3 (with lens) for right around $300. It is an older model but has a much larger sensor than a P&S and is capable of much better images than that or a phone.
Same for Olympus Pen E-PM1 and E-PL3 at $250.

You might want to consider a water proof camera. I have an Olympus Stylus Tough and love taking it to Disney. We take it into the pools to get underwater pictures and take it down the water slides to get videos. Fire away without worry on Splash Mountain, Kali River Rapids, or the water parks.
All the big brands have them.
