New camera suggestion?

I am looking for a new camera and not sure what to get. I love the images you get with a DLSR but don't want the bulk. I have been looking at the point and shoots that are available now, specifically Canon and Nikon. It is so overwhelming. Prices range from $100 up to $400 or $500 and even higher. Will a more expensive camera give me better pictures? I'm also looking for a camera that does well in low lit situations. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

I'd like to also hear some input .....I also want a new camera. I currently have a large P&S, it looks like a DSLR, that has manual mode so the pics are great but the camera is a pain to carry around. I know that I want a lot of zoom but also want a small compact camera.

I'm looking at the Sony H70. It has far less zoom than my other camera but the Sony is small and I can get a good deal on it this week.

I recently purchased a Canon SX30 IS. It has a 35x zoom, 14.1MP. It is a little pricey full retail, but I found mine on a good sale. I've been thrilled with it. Not as good as a DSLR of course, but better than the pocket camera I had previously. The battery life is very good if you are conservative in your preview/review. I like that it has a view finder or view screen, that is hard to find sometimes on a point and shoot (most just have the screen now).

Here is a photo from my backyard, free hand/no tripod:
