As promised, my family and I recently visited the re-opened Hungry Bear counter service restaurant in Critter Country. We tried several items from the new menu. If you are interested in seeing pictures and reading about our experience, click here.

P.S. Oops, just noticed there is already a thread started for this. Sorry for the double thread.

Thanks for the review! I have few questions. I don't really care for sweet pot. fries or onion rings (maybe one a burger). Can you sub reg fries with the sandwhiches? Also, did you find the tables more crowded there now that people don't have to bring in food from somewhere else to eat there?

Regular fries are no longer available at HB. Sorry. :guilty: You can only choose onion rings, sweet potato fries, or cole slaw for your side item. We liked the onion rings, but if those are not your thing, you may have to go with the slaw.

Seating was plentiful when we visited. It was on a weeknight, between 5:30-6:00pm. The upper deck was about 1/2 full, and the lower was nearly empty. I'm sure as word gets out that HB is open for business again, it will draw bigger crowds. Although it was very busy in the parks, the restaurant was not so. I've always thought this was one place were there was quite a lot of seating, and have never had trouble finding a table.

Thanks for the info! We used to eat here every visit since I'm a vegetarian and I liked their veggie burger, but now it looks like the only option is the fried green tomato sandwich, and I'm not a tomato fan. =P

I'm so glad to see this review before our trip. We just love the atmosphere of HB, but never really liked the food. I can't wait to give it a try next week!

Tony, what dessert was your favorite?

Thanks for reviewing the new menu & posting it here for those of us who can't easily get to the Park to try it ourselves :thumbsup2 That chiliburger & the green tomato sandwich look soooooooooooo good, and the bee cupcake & minipie are so cute! I've always liked the atmosphere/theming of the Hungry Bear but felt the menu to be lacking...now I'll be eating there a couple of times on my next trip!

:cool1: WOW, AWESOME!!!! We are going in April and we are excited to get back to Hungry Bear!!! Thanks for the pictures and the reviews!!! :cool1:

Honesty, they're both really tasty. I hate to be non-committal, but I like them equally. I love all things blueberry and lemon, so these desserts were right up my alley. The pie is served warm, which we loved. But the cupcake is so lemony good. Do what we did...get both!

Thanks for the great review! I guess you didn't try the chicken sandwich?

No, since it was just three of us (2 adults, 1 child) we ate what we could. The chicken sandwich didn't look bad, but just a typical chicken sandwich, so we skipped it for this meal in lieu of the newer items. Looking back, I wish we would've ordered it instead of the salad. That salad was really awful, but we had to try it.

If someone tries the chicken sandwhich I would be interested to know how it was. That or the chili burger sounds the most interesting to me. I'm still not sure about eating green tomatos. I just don't understand how you can eat them not ripe and not get sick. Just seems odd to me. :confused3 Now if they were fried RED tomatos, they might have something. :) I had never heard of eating green tomatos until that movie came out and it bothered me then too.

Green (unripened) tomatoes are more tart and firm than red tomatoes, but once you fry them up, they are yummy :) They are safe to eat :)

When I was there in November, I LOVED the onion rings. They were my favorite I have ever had. I was so looking forward to having them again in April. Now the picture looks different. I'm really bummed!!

How was the texture (slime quotient?) on the green tomatoes?

Not slimy at all. Green tomatoes are pretty firm, so they hold up well to being fried.

Thanks for the reviews & specially for the pics.

This is one of my boys' favorite places to eat, we are looking forward to it, specially dessert :lovestruc

I'm heading to Disney in May and was wondering if the Fried Green Tomato sandwich had any meat in it? I wanted to eat the the new Hungry Bear for lunch and my girlfriend is a vegetarian.

I know in my head they must be safe if so many people eat them, but it just seems wrong to me. I think I connect it with eating green apples or something. Maybe I should be daring and give it a try next trip. :)

BTW according to what I read the sandwich is a combo of fried green tomatoes & fried red heirloom tomatoes. Fried green tomatoes are yummy IMO and I tried them after the movie came out due to a huge curiosity factor and we love them.
