new blog: Disney and Visually Impaired Guests Prepare for Discrimination Trial

Yesterday, the district court issued an order which stated:
On February 27, 2012, the parties filed a joint report of settlement of claims [Doc. # 186], in which they indicated “that they have reached a full and complete settlement of all claims made on behalf of the class in this action, as well as all claims made by the individual plaintiffs.” (Jt. Rep. at 1-2.) The parties expressed their intent “to file papers seeking the Court’s preliminary approval of the settlement and proposed form of class notice by no later than March 19, 2012.” (Id. at 2.)
The parties have not yet filed the contemplated papers and the date by which they anticipated filing them has now passed. Accordingly, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that the parties shall file a joint status report by no later than April 9, 2012 and file their motion papers seeking preliminary approval of the class action settlement by no later than April 23, 2012.

Looks like Disney is closer to settling this. As the order implies, the rules on settlement of class actions requires the settlement be filed and approved by the court. Look for specific information on the terms of the settlement before the end of April.

very interesting!

i was completely clueless about anything sight related, but recently my mother has begun to go blind. It's not anything that can be corrected - her optic nerve is dying. Nothing can be done about it.

So i've become much more sensitive to what the visually challenged face (she will eventually be completely blind - she is very close to that now).

At WDW, it was very difficult for her. Unless she is directly in front of something and pretty close to it, she will not be able to see it.
WDW accommodates the hearing impaired rather well from what i could tell, but not the visually impaired. On the simplest level, i had to read every menu to her - the print was way too small for her to see - and probably best for her would be big pictures - she has a chance of seeing that. Braille is worthless for people like her. Who's going to learn braille when they're old? Large pictured menus would be very good for her - with large print captions of what each dish is.

i'm worried what's going to happen during the shows on the Disney Dream.
From what i understand, they have handicapped accessible seating in the walt disney theater, but i'm guessing this is far back. she needs to be in the center and close up. I guess i'll have to be sure to be there when the doors open and elbow my way through the crowds to hold seats for my mom and sister close up in the middle. But it would be nice if they had special seating for her so that she had a chance of seeing something.
