New baby gorilla

A few years ago, we saw a bunch of baby gorillas there. They were the celebs of the park, with a constant crowd clustered against the glass, taking endless pics/videos. I was looking down on this silly touristy behavior...until I got a chance to squeeze in there and take 100 vids and pics myself!

I heard Lily had a baby - was it hers?

Lily has not been bred yet .

The new baby Grace was born to Kashata and Gino.
Kashata and Gino are the parents of 2 other gorillas , Lilly who is 9 yrs old and Flint who is 5.

The caretakers found the mom and baby when they checked the gorilla quarters around 5 am. Kashata is an experienced mom who has bonded easily with and taken great care of her other 2 babies so they are letting her do her own thing . She didn’t sever the umbilical cord until later that day.
They don’t usually let the mom and baby out right away, but they did in this case because of Kashata’s experience.
Mom and baby will be attached for a few months , at which time Grace will start to crawl around on her own, but still within arms reach of mom.

I was so excited to see mother and baby today! When I get home from my trip I will download my photos.

They were talking about finding her a mate when I was there 2 years ago - but the consensus was that they'd have to send her away :( I'm glad she's still "at home" and they are giving her more time before she becomes a mom. But one of the CMs on the trail told my daughter last year that Lily had a baby?

We were at AKP yesterday and saw the new mom with her baby. Unfortunately, mom was clutching baby Grace close to her so we didn’t get a good view. But how exciting to have the birth happen during our trip! I am already looking forward to next year’s trip to see baby Grace! ❤️

TC :cool1:

Will Grace have a schedule of being out? We'll be there in July, and we would time our visit to Gorilla Falls when she's out for viewing, if there's a way to see the schedule in advance.

She will still be pretty much attached to mom in July, so wherever mom chooses to go, that is where she will be. They are not restricting her appearances.

Lilly is 9 so almost mature enough to have babies, but not with this family group. There is only 1 male and 3 adult females in this family group. The male (Gino) is Lilly’s father so they will not breed.

When her brother Flint and half brother Casy become mature they will be sent away from the family group as they would fight for dominence with Gino ( the dad).

I love the gorilla family!!!

I always ask the CM's questions about the gorilla's. I know Lilly had some health issues when she was born so I don't know that they would want to breed her. There is also the group of bachelor gorilla's at Gorilla Falls that are kept separate from this family unit. As explained to me by a CM, they won't breed them because they have genetic markings that are not favorable for breeding. They are very picky as to which gorilla's get put into the breeding program.
