I brought this sweet little guy home last week and he's turned into a teething/biting machine. elp!!! No, is my favorite word lately and I've got more bite marks on my hands, a hole in my sock and he's after anything he can sink his teeth into. Ouch! About the only thing that makes him quit is a can full of change.

Does anyone have any other ideas? He's got a smorgasboard of chew toys and plushies. My hands thank you for your ideas too. lol

OMG! He's adorable!!!

You can try a sour spray available at Petco, but my dog just thought of it as a condiment. My dogs like hoofies. Maybe one of those will interest him?

Yes, I do. He's only mildly interested in it. He seems to lose interest in everything he is allowed to have. lol

Do you play with him with the toys? Just asking. Some people think they can just give a puppy toys and he'll know what to do with them. We already had
dogs when we got the latest puppy this past summer. Our dogs are showing the puppy how to play with the toys in addition to wrestling with him. We also play fetch with him, fill his rolling ball with dog food, his kong with peanut butter and plenty of belly rubs.
We have two Goldens - one of which we got as a puppy. She was a biter. I would tell the kids "give her a toy" when she was biting them, but they would scream "she likes chewing on me!"....as they would run away, lol! Be diligent - tell him "no" when he bites your hands or ankles or wherever, then offer him a toy and play with him. He'll catch on after a while.
Also remember that a tired puppy is a well behaved puppy. :cutie:

I have no advice, but I wanted to mention what a cute puppy you have! :)

I had smaller dogs, but what I used was frozen wash cloths. Just wet them, ball them up and throw them in the freezer. When the chewing starts, grab one and give it to the dog. When it thaws, give him a new one, rinse the old one out and put it back in the freezer! It worked for me-my dogs found the cold soothing to their gums. There is also a toy called a "chilly bone". It was a stuffed cloth bone that you rinsed under water and then froze. I had one for my lab and she loved it! Good luck. On shoes and chair rungs I used tabasco like sauce dabbed on to deter the dogs. It seemed to work.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that pup is full of dang cuteness. I second the frozen washcloths.

my girl, yellow lab, thought of me as her teething toy. she loved going for my feet.

one day we were in petsmart and i was checking out the toys. there was a foot! i got a couple and ever since she hasn't bitten my feet once!

she's 3 now and she'll occasionally try to mouth my arm, but it's more playing now. not the fierce ankle biter that she was.

your baby is way too cute!

What a handsome guy. We've had two goldens and I can honestly say they chew till they are pretty old, like maybe 2 years. The best advice I can give you is to crate train and keep him safe when you aren't home to watch him. When he goes for any body parts or something you don't want him to chew, give him one of his allowed toys and tell him that is his and okay to chew.

My last golden never got over the shoe fettish. Fortunately he only chewed mine. As he got older, he would just take one shoe and put it on a different place. For his entire life he did this. Nearly every day one of us would have to search for just one shoe. It was often in another room but never damaged.

One time our neighbors kept him for us and when we returned she said...did you know your dog likes to move shoes around? Duh. I forgot to mention it.

Keep an eye on him and be gentle but firm with his redirection. Have fun, they are great dogs.

:love::love: That is one cute puppy!

My GSD outgrew it after a few months but my hands remember that feeling. Good luck!

Yeah, we play ball and he brings it back most of the time. We play chase anything I can throw as far as his toys go. We're admist potty training too. So, I take him for short walks and usually 2 longer ones throughout the day. I think he just takes a lot to wear out. Thanks for all the advice everyone. I've had two goldens, but it's been a while.

Unfortunately you've just got to keep telling him no and then giving him something its okay to chew on. A lot of dogs go through this, especially since most people checking out a puppy (whether at a petstore OR breeders) play with the puppies with their hands and/or feet since most people are unlikely to have a suitable dog toy in their pocket. :rotfl:

My advice is to find out what flavor he likes best - my dog LOVES peanut butter, but my mom's GSD doesn't really care for it, he prefers chicken - and get him treats to stuff/flavor his kong with that flavor. My dog didn't give her kong a second thought until one day it had peanut butter in it/on it in the grooves. Now I can leave her with it and she doesn't even notice I've left the room, much less the house!

It took awhile for me to figure out the consistency she liked for her chews, as well. (And I have to be careful what we leave out that has a similar consistency because she'll go for that in a heartbeat!) She doesn't like the really hard chews or the really soft ones - she prefers something with a little give, the consistency of the Nylabone puppy bones. Even now that she's gotten all her adult teeth in, she'll still return to those chew toys for entertainment. And especially when she's feeling a bit under the weather, her chew toys comfort her.

As dumb as this sounds, you need to limit the "chewies" and toys. Do not allow the puppy "free" access to toys. Make him earn "play time".

Then teach him what he can chew on. My pups did the Kongs and then we moved onto Nylabones.

Too many things to chew on can confuse a puppy. Anyway that was my strategy. Limiting stuff and being more simple allows for easier training.

We also leashed the pups in the house and used the leash/collar for correction.

What a cutie :lovestruc

One of my old dogs used to bite and nibble on anything that was in his path. Someone at my job asked if I had a cat because my hands at one point were all scratched up from the little puppy teeth.

Good luck to you and enjoy your new baby

We get real bones from the butcher. Our dog started out as a chewer and we would substitute ok things to chew on, mainly these bones from the butcher (real cow bones). She did very well with those and now only chews on things she is supposed to.

ROTFLOL! Am I the only person who thought this thread would be about B/F a new baby???

Sorry, no additional advice to what's already been mentioned, but I just had to tell you that "Jaws" ;) is just too ADORABLE!!! :lovestruc ...

Congratulations with your new pup! :goodvibes ....

I got him a Nylabone and I haven't heard a peep out of him for the last 1/2 hour. I also got some bitter apple, but that doesn't seem to phase him. I sprayed it on his leash and he chewed it first thing on his walk.
