New Avatar attraction, will it affect AKV?

I'm with you on this one. :thumbsup2 I'm not personally against Avatar because like many others I have yet to see it. But I am surprised that this is the direction Disney is heading and also surprised that AK is the park to be expanded. We have always felt that HS needed some added attractions because we can quickly do everything in that park before closing time. Just a few months ago there was a rumor here on the boards about a STAR WARS themed land being expanded at HS in the backlot area. It was to have a cantina restaurant with alien band playing and many of the planets and such to experience: Hoth, Endor...

Now call me a Star Wars geek, but that is a bankable theme. It is established, has successful movies, merchandise, books, and appeals to many different ages. That is the themed land that I would have gambled on to compete with Harry Potter. Haven't the Star Wars weekends already proven to be marketable? :confused3

:cloud9: LOVE that idea!

Tweens, Teens and adults but Disney will likely leave out the battle scenes and thus can also go for kids. Avatar grossed about $3 billion dollars making it the highest grossing film ever and a billion more than second place Titanic (also a James Cameron film). (There is rumor that they are considering another release of Avatar itself before any new one is released because they believe just a re-release would gross over a hundred million) Though the film is decent in 2D to really get the impact you need to see it in 3D. One might assume that 3D and Soarin-type attractions (fly through Pandora) may be a significant part of what Disney will be adding to AK.

It only grossed so much because of the 3D surcharge ;) not saying it wouldn't have made a ton of money otherwise, just sayin'...I'm partial to Tiatnic, so I'm still bitter about Avatar beating it out in terms of highest-grosser :rolleyes1

I am gathering this avatar land will be built i nsuch a way that it will easily be rethemed if the next avatar movies fail.

Kinda agree, but I think the price kept repeat biz down when compared to Titanic-I know people that went over and over to Titanic. I just had no interest in going to Avatar on the reg screen once we saw it in IMAX 3D.

I doubt it. Park themeing usually doesn't carry over to resorts. That would be like Star Tours theming spreading to Boardwalk.

I doubt it too, but not for the same reason.

However, park theming has indeed been carried out to the resorts. AKL is themed like AK. Grand Floridian is themed like Main Street (Victorian). Polynesian is themed like Adventureland. Fort Wilderness and Wilderness Lodge are themed like Frontierland. Contemporary is themed like Tomorrowland.

So what park are BC, YC, BW, OKW, SSR themed after? Plus CS, PO, CB and the values? Nothing that I can think of. I think those resorts just happened to be themed that way, not after something in a park.

Main Street USA is themed after Walt Disney's home town in Missouri, not after turn of the century FL.

This is what I have always understood as well. AKL was themed after Africa - not anything in particular at the Animal Kingdom. I actually had the luxury to speak to several native African's who have been/seen the AKL and they stated it was very authentic to the African theme (albeit on a much larger scale).

Certain parks and resorts share elements but there is no established pattern of duplication. The Polynesian may be reminiscent of Adventureland but they didn't add Aladdin or Capt. Jack to the Poly as the theme park evolved over the years. Buzz Lightyear, Stitch and Monsters Inc were not used to influence room re-designs at the Contemporary.

me too haha! I thought I was only one on Earth who hasn't watched it.

that gives you both bragging rights;)

i shudder to think how much disney paid for the rights but now that they're commited, release the imagineers & make it work!~it's not much of a jump that a possible LOTR venture will likely land at Universal?:wizard:
