Now that Disney is truly going Hawai'i and the new resort is fantastic, I think they should take some of the new design and incorporate that into the aging Polynesian Resort. Let’s face it, the Poly has been there since 1971, has had a few renovations and sprucing up but it is needing of some updating. Adding some of the new designs that are in Aulani would be great.
Let’s ask that they throw in a DVC edition as well. ;) Oh yea, the GF is getting that. Oh well...

What parts are you considering? Hawaiian weather allows for such open construction, with open air lobbys and public gathering areas. Last December it was 45°F in Orlando. Give me the doors and a furnace, please!

Disney registers future plans with the county for various items that never happen, to lock in certain requirements before future changes that may restrict them in using the property. Don't count on GF being the next DVC playground.

Disney is always in a tough spot when it comes to making any changes. For every person that wants to update the Polynesian (or anything else at WDW), there are others who will be unhappy with any change to the existing resort. Just the nature of Disney fanatics, I guess. Look at the concerns people have over changing the DVC logo, which really isn't even part of the WDW experience.

My guess is that unless occupancy at the Polynesian starts slipping, they won't be making any changes of note.

Who is the quote at the bottom of your posts from? I :lovestruc it.

The original quote was from Thomas Aquinas about faith, but it has been changed and distorted to fit various different subjects like Disney, golf, NASCAR, British comedy, male cheerleaders etc... etc... Here is the original quote:

For those with faith, no explanation is necessary. For those without, no explanation is possible. –Thomas Aquinas

One rumor has been circulating that the Poly will be torn down and rebuilt in phases... The construction techniques and materials used back in the day do not conform with the today's standards... The rumor also states that the Poly is riddled with asbestos and it is more cost effective to tear it down and rebuild it than it would be to remove the asbestos and thoroughly clean it out... I will point out that this post is based upon rumor and I pass it on as such...

There is no mention in the rumor regarding the rebuilt Poly having a DVC component... This rumor only addressed the physical structures being knocked down and rebuilt.... Nothing more or less...

I know tons of people on these boards love the Poly ... but we visited on our last trip and to me it looked kinda like the Honolulu airport.... :confused3 It could use a facelift. :thumbsup2

That rumor sounds odd to me. I don't think you can bulldoze or implode a building with asbestos, because that would release asbestos fibers into the air. Instead, I think you have to abate (remove) the asbestos, then you can tear down the asbestos-free building. At that point, why tear down asbestos-free buildings?

In many cases, you have to essentially tear the building down to its framework in order to remove the asbestos. Walls, ceilings and flooring materials are often removed.

The steel structure could be re-used but the savings would not be dramatic, if there are any at all. And designers would largely have to adhere to the existing footprint of the structure and all remaining supports.

If they just need to get rid of asbestos and plan to keep the same room & building layouts, that would work fine. But if they have any plans to re-build with a different design, starting over from scratch may be more sensible.
