New ATM "fee", watch out!

 If it didn't mean getting money orders to pay certain bills I couldn't pay in person, I'm pretty sure I would go "cash only." I've switched banks more than once to get to one with more reasonable fees. Now I'm considering going credit union but haven't looked into it yet.

Thanks for the heads up!

Reason #106 that USAA Federal Savings Bank rocks. Not only do they not charge any ATM fees (they don't own any ATMs themselves) but they refund the fees that other banks charge, I believe up to $15/month.

:cheer2:

And they give you money (not much--but hey--it's profit ;)) for using the ATM card as a debit.

Recently at the jail where I do orders of protection, there was a new ATM machine put it. It is right beside the copy machine, so I was reading the disclaimers and such posted on it one night (because I have to make a gazillion copies and get bored.. lol). Anyway, the fee to withdraw money from that particular ATM is $50!!!!!!!!! Yes, FIFTY DOLLARS!!! I'm assuming the only time it is used is when someone is getting cash to pay a bondsman, but heck, that's a lot of money!!!

That's reason #105 ;)... though I think you have it backwards, you get the cash back for using your debit card as a credit card rather than debit card.

My only problem w/ USAA is that it takes too long for me to get money into the account there and mailing a deposit is dicey.

That said, I just got a notice from my bank that I had 8 transfers between accounts in October and I'm only allowed 6, so they are hitting EACH ACCOUNT with a $10 fee, plus $2 for each extra transfer, so I'm about to get charged $28 for something I didn't even know was a rule (or a problem until AFTER the fact ) "It's in the account disclosures", they said. "I don't have the magnifying lens from The Santa Clause 2!!!", said I. Lesson learned. It's cheaper to make a run to the bank than to use online banking to move my money around. :confused3

Fees are often an indication that consumers have been making purchase decisions (or in this case, banking decisions) based solely on the big-print cost, rather than establishing a true relationship with their intended supplier. Loyalty is dead, and that's now working both ways.

Personally, I've been hit with various BoA fees, but don't consider them to be out-of-the-ordinary enough to substantiate switching banks. There is a substantial personal cost in learning the ropes of getting good customer service out of a new supplier -- why should I incur all that cost to save a few dollars, especially when, as likely as not, there are down-sides of the new supplier that I won't realize until I'm already switched. I tried switching to Citizens when BoA took over Fleet -- gosh, what a mistake! So that decision, which was made with a lot of research, ended up costing me TWICE as much.

 That's what I meant. :teeth:

What is USAA Federal Savings Bank and how do I join? Sounds excellent.

Go to USAA.com--you can get information there. If you are not in the military--you still can join. They will just have to issue you a # since you will not have one.

I disagree--we are in Florida and pretty far from them. We direct deposit our paycheck and tax returns and anything that can be autodeposited. They have special envelopes for deposits. Items are credited as soon as received--not as soon as the check clears. If I need something there right away and want to know that it has safely been received--(like a very large check) I will mail it for signed delivery. We haven't once lost a deposit in the 8 or so years we have banked with them.

Their customer service is excellent...and the one time out of thousands it might have been a problem...it was handled promptly and efficiently.

They are an excellent bank--established for the armed services who are stationed world-wide. They make great strives in making it as convenient as possible even though they aren't in the building around the corner from your neighborhood.

We use Web billpay to pay our bills as well. I do not believe we are charged for the service either. :goodvibes

The only bank originated "hits" on our checking account are deposits: Credit Card rebate (using debit as credit), ATM Fee refund, and Interest. :goodvibes :goodvibes

It's getting ridiculous with all these fees! Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought that ATMS were originally brought in to save money so that people wouldn't be using tellers. Now if you go in to a teller, you have to pay a $2 fee for that. Fortunately, the bank we use doesn't do that, but I think it's outrageous. I'm not sure if we get charged a denial fee. Come to think of it, I tried to get $350 out a couple of weeks ago and found out my limit was $300. I'll have to check my statement when it comes to see if I was charged that fee. :confused3

You guys think ATM fees are out of control?? You should see what fee my bank charged me with !! :rolleyes1

They charged me 1.50 JUST for calling their 800 # to check on my account balance more than 1 time during a 24 hour period!! :badpc: (I only called the 1-800 # 2 times ) Needless to say, I am seriously thinking of changing banks to my dh's credit union.
