I have to call foul on Disney and the Orange County SO.

Several years ago, WDW sold it's Motorola Radio system and 800mhz frequencies to Nextel. In exchange, Nextel gave them an incredible rate on Airtime. So now, WDW uses a Cellular Provider for it's two-way radio system.

Nextel uses a 6-to-1 Time Division Multiplexing Scheme. What this means is that there are 6 digital time slots per 25 kilohertz channel. This voice channels are switched to difference frequencies and time slots every time someone keys the radio. This means that there is no way to just tune-in and listen to the radio broadcasts and record them over-the-air.

What all this means is that WDW did not own their own two-way radio infrastructure. Without being able to to use T1 recording interface or having a 1 radio per talkgroup analog interface, there is no way Disney has audio recordings of the voice traffic leading up to and during the accident.

The handheld radios they use, are not tied into a "cockpit" recorder.

The only hope for a recording is that there was a hot mic recorder in the cockpit or in CO.

Nextel can only give Call Detail Reports to Orange Co and Disney.

I know this is all technobable, but it is also central to their investigation.

The call detail may be enough to show that protocol was likely followed and, sadly, if a desperation call was made.

Disney seems to have judged that operator (pilot) console command records would be sufficient for any accident investigation :sad2:. In their favor, the Nextel system is probably less prone to interference (as in illegal use of the frequency). I worked at a hospital that had problems with pranksters transmitting on (trunked) hospital frequencies.

Also, there was a story a number of years ago of a spy/terrorist being caught with, among other things, a list of Disney's frequency usage. Not that one couldn't figure that out with equipment and time, but interesting nonetheless that WDW made the list.

Here is a story about Austin and a Child he touched with Disney Magic a few days before the accident.

I can't imagine what this family must feel after hearing of Austin's death :sad1: and realizing they had video taped him.
Did anyone else notice the condensation on the side windows? I hope that didn't cause a problem with visibility the night of the accident.

It is hard to see someone who obviously had so much passion for the job pass away so suddenly. Very, very sad, my thoughts are with his family and friends.

just watched the video and his poor parents and friends must be beside themselves. He seemed like and awesome guy and I am so completely sad about this situation and oddly enough I feel very frustrated that it even happened.

If I had a wish it would be to give that kid back to his parents and that this whole thing never would have happened:sad1:

That was so sad and so happy at the same time. It was great to see a cast member that loved his job and went the exter mile to make a guest so happy.:thumbsup2 It sad to know that he will not be their to make the magic real for others.:sad1: My prayers go out to his family.

What a great memory. He was alot of fun. We had the pleasure of riding with Austin in May.

What a remarkable young man; what a tragic loss.

I am editing to add this.

It is so beautiful and thanks to tlcoke for the Original Post

Didn't see this on here.... sorry if it is already.

Thank you for posting this!! Awesome tribute for someone lost too soon.

He seemed to be living him dream job from that video. I personally wish we could focus less on the CM aspect, but it really seemed to be a part of him life.

I got chills at the end when she said "We have to say goodbye to Austin". Really sad...
