DH and I went to home deport yesterday just to pick up some light bulbs and PVC pipe (and a broom since we were going anyway) and I went to the kitchen section...and now I want granite counter-tops and new pulls for my cabinets, and of course the old linoleum needs to be changed.

No really...how can this be done on the cheap. I saw some low end granite, I could be perfectly happy with for $40 installed. I have a very small kitchen. It wouldn't cost that much. I know I should shop around, but I have no idea where.

So what should I know and how do I save if I am not willing (or able) to do any work myself? DH can put in new pulls but that is it. I need to hire someone to take out the linoleum, put in tile, take off the laminate counters and put on granite. I guess I will need a backsplash too. So how much should I figure on spending?

I rarely go into Home Depot or Lowe's. Every time I do I get annoyed and anxious. It's to big, have to roam around to find anything, and get to see all the things that we could/should replace and make a mental shopping list with prices. I usually leave with a headache.

We just moved and needed to buy ceiling fans for the rooms, we ended up spending too much money on things we saw around lowes. My husband bought a ladder and a pull cart (which we really didn't need but he wanted). I hate those stores!

We had our laminate counter tops replaced with quartz this past summer (quartz has less maintenance and can be less expensive). We have a small kitchen and it was $5000 for the work. To save some money, we pulled the counter tops out ourselves and we hooked the new faucet up afterwards. Doing some work ourselves saved us about $500. This past weekend we put tile on the floor of our kitchen. We laid it over the vinyl using a system called Tavy. It was several days of hard work but we did it for less than $400.

You would be surprised at how much the price of granite has come down. We attended a granite how to seminar at HD and the employee giving the speech was very knowledgable. Next time you are there talk to someone in the kitchen dept.

Yes. That's what I noticed. I always thought the price would be way over my budget, but I really don't have a big kitchen and I think I can do all the counters for under $2K installed. I might actually be able to swing that...and maybe I could do the floors next year. Little by little.

I'm getting it fabricated and installed in the kitchen and in the bathroom, labor included for $1700. This also includes a tile backsplash in the kitchen with a strip of glass mosaic tile for decoration. I was beyond thrilled with this price.

I don't have a breakdown on the difference between the granite and the backsplash or the amount that's included for removing existing tile, sink faucet and replacing with new sink faucet (I haven't picked the fixtures but my price to the contractor includes the labor to install).

I have about 15 linear feet of counter space.

I think I also have under 15 linear ft (if you include the area around the sink). Otherwise, it's probably about 12 or so. I can definitely use remnants since my counter is actually broken into 3 separate pieces by the stove placement (and the long piece has the sink in the middle, so I think a remnant would work there too.

My mother in law just got granite for her small kitchen and it was $5000 and they pulled the old counters themselves.

I'm heading to Home Depot this weekend to look at countertops. I'm not sure what I want yet, but I don't think I want granite. I'll post back after I get the estimate.

Lowes had one granite choice that is I think, $29 square foot installed. That was the cheapest one, and it was grayish. I thought it would work fine, because my cabinets are white. I will look into that remnant option as well, before I decide. And check with Costco, I guess. DH wants laminate.

We want to sell the house in less than 2 years, so I don't really care all that much about the color. I just want it to replace the green laminate (hello 1990s!) Will be painting the white cabinets white. I just don't think we should put down new laminate in a house that should sell for about $395,000-400,000. But I would use a cheaper one, because a new owner may re-do the kitchen anyway.

It looks like I'll have at least 5 more years in this house, so I'd like granite of some kind, but color is not a big deal to me either. Every house around here seems to be pretty updated, so when I sell, I will be way under current housing stock if I have laminate and linoleum. It has to be done, so why can't I enjoy it for a few years.

5) If interested in your tile/granite work, let them quote you.

6) You can then use that quote versus others in your area.
7) We have yet to have someone beat Home Depot's quotes.
