Do to my son on the last trip becoming terrified to fly I will be driving down from now on or until he can fly again. Since I have never drove I have not a clue on a good area to stop for the night. We would like to stay just one night on the way down and one on the way back. Is this pushing it from SW Michigan? Where is a good area to stop with cheap clean hotels? Any other advice would also be great. I hope to squeeze in an extra trip next year and want the drive to go smoothly.

We drive from northern Illinois in one day, guessing the distance is about the same, so its an easy two day trip.. I would suggest getting beyond Altanta on the first day, maybe the Macon area..

We drove from Pennsylvania in August straight through. We stopped a couple times for the necessary stops, and once for supper at South of the Border. Other than that, we (or should I say my fiance), drove straight through. We were at South of the Border about 2 1/2 hours, and it took us a total of 20 hours. That was the first time I had driven there (always fly), and it wasn't nearly as bad as I anticipated. We had a 10 and 13 year old with us. I would suggest making sure you have PLENTY for the kid(s) to do. We have a portable DVD player and that was a godsend!

We'll be doing the I-75 drive in less than two weeks. Leaving from DD's house in the Cincinnati 'burbs, we'll get into Ga easily that first day. It will depend on how the kids (ages 1 and 4) tolerate the trip as to how far we will get. Ideally, I'd like to get a little south of Atlanta. Be sure to beep as you pass my exit off of 75--It's "Buttermilk" Pike---we have such colorful names of places in Kentucky <G>....:hippie:

Have a safe trip:goodvibes

What happened to make a 3-year old terrified to fly?!?

I would recommend that you drive long enough to make it past Atlanta and morning rush hour traffic. That should take you about 12 hours. Your second leg should take about 7-8 hours so you'll be in late afternoon on your second day.

We decided to drive last summer for our trip in August. We actually enjoyed it. My fear of flying, the hustle and bustle of the airport, and the money were all factors in our decision.

We try to leave when the children are going to be sleeping on the way down. We take our time coming home, although we don't dawdle. My daughter did her makeup school work on the way home last November when we drove. Of course we highly recommend the portable DVD system. We also used the little gifts wrapped up trick to help with the drive home.

Although we know there are definite advantages to flying, we just feel like at this point driving is a better fit for our family. We like being able to pack whatever we want and as much as we want. I like being able to check out at Pop and then go to Downtown Disney or somewhere else to extend the trip just a little longer. And we like having our vehicle for those times when we don't want to take the bus. My husband and I actually have time to talk without interuption while we are driving. All in all, we can't complain.
