We have never, ever been on a cruise but would really like to take the kids in 2005. Money is a factor! We have three rugrats (soon to be 7, 6 and 3.) Where do I go to get the best deal I can? I know that we can book two cat 9 or 10 rooms that connect and that should be cheaper than a cat 4, but it is hard to figure out how to compare fares this way.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks

edited to add: how much do you have to tip and what other costs are on top of the cruise price?/

There are 4 people you need to tip - restaurant service, restarant assistant service, restaurant head server, and your stateroom host. DCL publishes recommended amounts for each person. The amount is per person and depends on the length of your cruise. It is also customary to tip room service or anyone else who comes to your room a few dollars ($1 or more depending on service. Also, don't forget the baggage handlers when you drop off your luggage and if they help carry you stuff when you get off ($1-2 per bag is normal)

The recommended amount, per person on 3 day, 4 day and 7 day cruises are as follows:
Restaurant server - $11.00, $14.75, $25.75
Assistant server - $8.00, $10.75, $18.75
Head server - $2.75, $3.75, $6.50
Stateroom host - $10.75, $14.50, $25.25

Additional costs include excursions done off the ship while in port, adult beverages, spa, gift shop, certain snack available on board (like candy, popcorn), certain activities like wine tasting, dining in the special restaurant Palo. I know there are more but that is all I can think of right now.

As to your original question about rates, the rates do vary greatly depending on the stateroom, time of year you want to cruise, and how far in advance you book.

Rates are generally highest during holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, spring break) and the summer - pretty much any time kids are out of school.

You might want to contact a travel agent who is very familiar with Disney Cruise Lines and they will be able to quickly put together some quotes with a variety of cruise dates and stateroom options. (I think I will pass on making any specific recommendation for a travel agent as this can be touchy subject on these boards)

Also, don't forget to factor in travel to the port and insurance. Another popular option is to arrive in the area the day before and spend the night in Orlando or near the Port. There are usually very inexpensive hotel options and this will give you cushion in your travel plans in case you get delayed.

Gravymom...

The best DCL trip planning book is the passporter... also Birnbaum has a DCL book out now with nice pics in it.. great for kids...

My sugestions are to cruise during school/ not summer or any "breaks"..

The last week of August is also at a lower rate and may be before your kids go back to school...

Your first cruise should be a 3 or 4 day....

You do not have to do any shore excursions at (N) port... just enjoy the ship there is so much to do... Bring your own floties and snorkel equip for Castaway Cay...

start putting your money for tips away now... a little at a time....

As far as money on the ship other than tips... you really dont "need" any...

If you want personal budget info from a "planner with little money" PM me and I will be happy to give you info... :flower: :flower:
