Netflix - can you watch online w/ DSL?

Please excuse my stupidity. I am so not tech savvy! I have DSL, 3.0 mbps. For wathcing the Netflix movies online on demand, can you use DSL, or do you have to have broadband access like form the cable company? I know I cna see soem of the TV shows from the network websites (watched the last episode of Men of a Certain Age on the TNT website), but a few times it froze up for a few seconds each time.

I'm trying to decide if I want to sign up for Netflix; that's why I'm asking. Thanks!

EDIT: in case it matters, it's just me, so there wouldn't be anyone trying to be on the web at the same time or anything.

we have DSL and haven't had any problem watching Netflix movies (we use the Xbox 360 to do so because that's hooked up to the TV already, unlike the laptop)

We do the same when watching on our computers, but our BluRay is plugged directly into the DSL line, not wireless.

We have never had a problem watching anything from Netflix. We can use more than one computer or the BluRay and a computer at the same time. Hulu does pause often and sometimes the audio is slightly off from the picture... not sure if it's our connection or their website.


We actually got rid of our satellite and now just use the internet or watch Netflix play instantly instead of TV.

You should be fine. 3.0 is more then enough for streaming a movie. Of course keep in mind that if you are streaming a movie, doing a video chat, downloading a music album, and connecting to work via VPN all at the same time you may have some bandwidth issues.

As for wireless, that also shouldn't matter even if you are stuck with 802.11b instead of g. Unless you are also sending a lot of data back and forth on the LAN (from one computer to another in your house) even the slower b connection has move throughput then the DSL so you should be fine.

I didn't know you could hook the Blu-ray directly up to the DSL! Any recommendations on models? I was thinking of getting a blu-ray anyway. I can move my Sony DVD player to the bedroom and put the blu-ray in the LR.

Does the blu-ray have to run though the modem or do you plug it directly into the DSL plug that's in the wall phone plug?

I think your Blu-Ray player has to work wirelessly in order to be able to see Netflix movies.

We are waiting for Wii to be added in the Spring. I watch Netflix right from my HP Netbook, wireless connection, no problems.

Yes....just buy a blue ray that has wireless. I know there is a Samsung model that is very highly recommended.

We stream through the PS3. Love it! I was considering getting a blue ray for the other room with wirelss so I could stream in there when I heard about the Wii coming this spring, so I will just wait for that!

Yes....just buy a blue ray that has wireless. I know there is a Samsung model that is very highly recommended.

Yes you do, how else will the TCP/IP packet get from the Interwebs to the Blu-Rayplayer?

It is also not true the Blu-Ray player "has" to have wireless. You can run a Cat5 cable through the wall to the player instead of using wireless. If you are using wireless make sure both the Blu-Ray player and your wireless router support WPA encryption and not just WEP.

In order to stream instantly to the PS3 (and the Wii this spring) you need to insert a disc that they provide into the player to "unlock" the streaming capabilities. I am sure FireDancer will know all the techno jargon for why you need a disc...

You can also watch things instantly right on your PC/Laptop. Not everything is available, but it is a nice feature! I prefer watching things on my TV, but we have streamed instantly at the airport and stuff to our laptop.

Yes, you have to go on Netflix.com and order the disk, I think they are supposed to start sending them out in late March or April, not sure. You have to have at least a plan for $8.99 and up. Now all I have to do is get DH to do whatever is needed to make our Wii wireless, men

No need to hook the laptop up to the television, just log onto Netflix from your computer and the movies that say "play", will instantly play right on your computer, we have one that the modem is attached to that DH watches movies on and I watch from my netbook. We have the wireless modem from T-mobile @ home.

What type of cord you need to connect the laptop to the TV depends on your laptop and tv.

We used to just have an older TV. We had a cord with S-video on one end to plug into the laptop and the 3 colored thing on the other end to plug into the TV.

We got a new TV and laptop recently and we just leave that one connected with a monitor cable all the time. The monitor cable only transfers the picture to the TV and we have separate speakers that are plugged into the laptop. We have a wireless keyboard and mouse, so we can sit on the couch and use the internet and watch TV shows online.


If you have a BluRay player that is compatible with netflix, you do not need to hook the TV up to a computer to watch Netflix on it... you just use your BluRay remote. This is mostly all we watch.

Just bought the Samsung 1600 for $130 on sale at BestBuy had to purchase a dongle from newegg for $30 to go wireless but so far so good.
