Netflix basic plan just went up to $15.98

I have never used Netflix. I use Blockbuster by mail and I have the 3 DVD plan where you can have 3 DVD's out at a time and then once you watch the movies you can take them into the Blockbuster store and trade them (free) for new releases. Once you return the new releases they mail you 3 more DVD's. It costs me $19 a month.

Personally I think they should have to notify me by mail or email of this increase. I hardly ever sign into my account. We stream on the Xbox everyday and have a long DVD queue for 2 at a time so really no need to sign in that often that and I am usually using the touch and signing into netflix for whatever reason lags the iPod. So I'm pretty ticked (but appreciative) that I had to find out on the Disboards.

I got an email around 4:00 this afternoon. Not sure why some people didn't get an email :confused3

As for me, I'll definitely only be doing either streaming or dvd, not both. I don't use both enough to justify the increased cost.

Would it be possible to get streaming one month, then change plans to get dvd the next month, and then change back to streaming, etc.?

I received the email. We dropped the DVD's and went with streaming only. My boys watch instant stream all the time. I can get DVD's at the library for free.

I didn't get the email but I'm glad I read the article. Not sure what I'm going to do at this point. I just might have to look into other options if the cost does not work out for me.

We just have streaming, no DVDs. Is that going up, too?

Sure. You will be able to do that no problem. It typically takes 2 or 3 days for your new plan to go into effect.

Comcast is currently 250G which could be used up by a lot of HD streaming.

:confused:So, unlimited, really isn't unlimited?

$8 is an inexpensive way to entertain the younger DGKs. They love the kiddie shows, and I watchan occasional movie.

I expect more changes in the near future. I don't think this plan is going to work out for Netflix.

Why? Even at $20/month you could conceivably watch 10+ DVD's and unlimited streaming. That works out to $2/movie, not including any that are streamed. You can't even get into one movie at the theater for that price. Even just watching one movie/month for 2 or more people pays for your subscription. I think any "change" you might see is to do away with the DVD option altogether and just stream.

I wouldn't have even known about this if I hadn't been on the MSN home page this morning. It was saying that customers got an email but I don't see anything. So I went to my account info in my Netflix account and there it was. Telling me that my price was going to go up on the next billing cycle. Not cool Netflix.

I just got the e-mail notice this morning. Still ticked about it tho, and can't even let them know since you can't send them an e-mail and they locked the price increase article on their blog.

My husband claims he still uses the dvds but I think we have had the same ones for months. I don't use them at all. I barely even stream except for a few shows I watch with my husband. Mostly I watch Hulu... I like it better.

The problem (as I am sure has been mentioned) is that the catalog for streaming on Netflix is poor. I know they are trying to push to all streaming, but they need to update the streaming catalog before charging 100% more for an inferior product.

Looking at Blockbuster and Hulu

I tend to agree, but this is how they are going to raise the money to do that. DVD delivery models are failing all over the country. They have to go to streaming to survive, but they have to raise capital to accomplish that.

To me, Netflix still seems to be the best option for this type of entertainment. Hulu and Blockbuster are less expensive, but offer far fewer selections. And cable/satellite companies have lost their minds with their pricing models.

I would pay even more for streaming content (from any company) if they improve their inventory. I am willing to see how this plays out over time.

For those who prefer DVDs, you may soon be out of options. All of the companies that offer that service are looking to get out - including Redbox.

That's how I figured it out too. It still seems like a decent deal to our family and we're going to cut our cable bill down.

I would also pay more if they upgrade their streaming.

We are canceling ours. We can just go to the local redbox or blockbuster express for less than that.
