nervous for dh right now UPDATE 2-22

It is scary these days. I took a paycut of approximately 20% last summer so I empathize with the rest of you. :flower3:

I'm so grateful that we haven't had pay cuts. They did "re-structure" some upper management positions and combined several positions. They offered early retirement or flat out laid off the eliminated positions. This was done to avoid cutting the pay or eliminating bedside care staff. I think it was the right decision because bedside care is already understaffed and we receive numerous complaints, but the hospital is in the red and can't afford to staff us with any more.

My DH just took a 20% pay cut a few weeks ago, grateful to still be employed. There were some that were laid off. I pray for our country, things arent getting better....

OP -- I know it's impossible to tell you not to worry. I was there just last week when DH's bosses boss scheduled a meeting with hubby, for no discernible reason (and after reading last month a rumor in a trade magazine of possible layoffs). DH has been with the company for a while, but his group was dissolved and the people taken into a new group, so now he's the new guy in a department. Oy. DH mentioned it in passing right before he fell asleep and I was left with my stomach churning. I must have looked at the clock every 30 seconds after the time his meeting was to start, and each time it felt like a day had passed ;)

But the boss just wanted to check in to see how things were going, make sure DH was doing okay with the new group, with new functions, etc. Turned out he'd scheduled a similar meeting with all the new people. And I agree...why, oh why, don't they give people a heads up in this environment instead of leaving them to their own stressed imaginations.

Now, that being said, I think all evidence points to positive things for your DH! I mean, he just got part of his salary back. Then the boss says he owes him a great lunch. Not just a lunch, but a great lunch. But it's not anything urgent enough to make sure it happens ASAP. And my time in HR showed me that when a supervisor absolutely knows he/she has to give someone their termination notice or salary decrease, they want to get it over with as soon as they are allowed to...because it weighs on them as well. (Of course, if he has a history of being cruel, criminally insensitive, or a major coward, that might not apply for you...though those people don't tend to do it nicely, they either make your life miserable so you'll quit or just bluntly drop you anytime and any place, not at a nice lunch).

So, this delay doesn't seem like what he needs to discuss is urgent enough to make it a "have to do it now" or "need to get this over with" issue. That also leads me to believe that if it were another salary/benefit cut due to finances, he would be in a hurry to make it happen so their bottom line improves. But since the boss did refer to the accountant, it sounds more like he's trying to either adjust some sort of bonus structure or give back some more of your DH's salary. The lunch may have been initially to tell your DH that he wanted to do this for him, but that he wasn't positive he could. He may have decided after all not to say anything until he was certain he could (or there was a financial hit that came up requiring a delay). Or, perhaps he wants to give him a promotion but needs to see if it has to be in name only, or if he can afford to give a salary bump with it.

And again, he may just be checking in to make sure your DH isn't dissatisfied after all you've been through. He may be sensitive enough to know this has been hard on his employees, and respect/need your DH enough that he wants to make sure he sticks with them.

Either way, all the clues seem to point to this being a benign, or even positive, issue. I'm not saying I feel certain of that, but I'm a pretty "the glass is half-empty or half-full depending on if you just drank some or poured some" person. And I see this as not sounding like devastating-variety news.

Best of luck to you. :goodvibes

I know how you feel!

DH's whole department was dismantled last month and it ended up that just he and one other person kept their jobs. All of the rest were let go.

As for raises, I'm going on my 4th year at my company. My first raise was $.12 an hour and then my second was about the same. They froze salaries after that and have been doing furloughs lately. Good times. :)

Keeping my fingers crossed for you and your hubby!!! My husband took a 42% pay-cut last year..........wow it hurt!!!!!

75% in our home, we have been paying the mortgage with the 401K monies. Enough for 2 more. My UC runs out in three weeks and so far no final extention by this weeks letter.

Hope it is a raise even if small for your dh, we all could use a bit of good news around the forumsl

All of you that have dealt with the big pay cuts are in my heart. I am hoping beyond hope for some good news.

I will wish the same for all of you!

OP the suspense is killing me. My DH works for a very small company too and he has heard that line about sitting down with the accountant.

Fingers crossed for you :goodvibes

As DH was leaving work Friday his boss said "let's have lunch Monday". A year ago he was hit with a 30% pay cut.Several months ago they gave him a little back (about 5%) and at that time said more would be coming back as the economy improved.

Well this is either a great lunch where we may get some more back - or a disaster lunch that the company is closing. (it's very small)
I could just throw up. Positive thoughts for him if you can!

Hopefully it's a thing where he wants to get his input on things without eavesdroppers. Good luck!

I just found this thread and am wondering if the OP has heard anything yet? It is just mean for the boss to put you & your DH through this especially with the economy. I hope you get great news! :goodvibes:

pixiedust: to all the posters who have taken pay cuts and lost jobs this year. I hope things get better soon.

Thanks for the bump but still I've got nothing. So he still has a job- but no pay comments at this time. He keeps saying "The account" excuse. Fingers are still crossed here. And I promise to update if I ever hear anything. It was quite a letdown. But I am still hopeful!

Uggg...

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I took a $10,000 pay cut for the current year. Now they are seriously discussing cutting our salaries 8% across the board. Between DH and myself (same employer), that would mean another cut of almost another $10,000.

The boss could sure have done a better job with this, couldn't he? Sorry you're being teased this way. :scared:

Sorry you still haven't heard anything!

After months of waiting to find out about our jobs, we were told today that our office is closing in September. It was a tough day.

DH took a 20% pay cut last year and it doesn't look like it will be coming back anytime soon.

Well I am thinking if it was bad they wouldnt hold out a month to say sorry but you are getting less money/or sorry your job is done. They would want to do that right away....dont you think?
