DIS Dads Nemesis Challenge 2

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Therapy today to start the process of confirming the knee is healed and training can start.

I started training a while ago and then experienced some pretty strange swelling patterns and feeling inside the knee. Was up to 2 miles a couple times a week and biking about 5 miles every few days. Had to shut it down per the surgeon recommendation (yes, the guy that said it would be healed about 6 months ago). Now we go back and see if I can start up again. Wish me luck, first session at noon today.

Called Disney Dining. I can make the reservation at 7am on Sunday. Il Mulino has a cap of 12 people but I called the hotel and left a message for their groups manager. I'll try to get it for 14 so that we have a little room. I will let everyone know when I hear back.

Who is on the list...

Me
Crash
Barry
Bambi
Madison
Evan
Ryder (High Chair)
Randall
Jodi
Paul
Carl
Justin
Chris

And Paul, The Pirate Princess wrinkled her nose when I told her you are only doing the Half. Maybe we should get a high chair for you and put you next to Ryder. Keep in mind that is from someone that signed up for the 5K and may not be able to even do that. And Barry, I knew you could take Tim but not sure you can take Paul down.

Thanks CJ! :thumbsup2

Can we add Chris to the list?

Thanks Paul! :thumbsup2

hey stupid question. Are we doing pasta to load up on carbs???? wont beer do the same thing????:confused3

Yes, go for the beer Carl. Might give me an edge to have you hung over

I have my edge, you have Randall on your team !!!:rotfl2::rotfl2: But serious I was taught by a friend that beer is good for trainging and running. This friend would never let me down, so I have to follow his lead. The key to a successful Disney run is Beer,Dolewhips, and some Poly sunshine.
I am guessing once the word gets out. The secret training facility will be crowded with DisDads.

So much for letting you into the circle of trust!

I meant to say: the secret to Disney running is to stay in your hotel room and get plenty of rest..., yea,yea thats what I meant

Il Mulino is booked. That is the good news. The bad news is they will not go to 12. I made 2 reservations, one for 8 and one for 6. They also can't guarantee we will sit together. Both reservations are at 7:00.

Let me know if you guys are still in and we have a couple of spots left if anyone else wants to join us.

Jodi and I are still in!

Just thought I'd re-spark the conversation in this thread. For both the first timers and the veterans it is probably time that everyone is getting out there on a regular basis to start building a base. It may be a little early for the actual Half Marathon training plan but building a base will make things all the more easy when it does come time for that.

For me this will be my 2nd try at this race. Last year I started a diet in late winter, lost about 40 or so pounds then started running in June. After the race this past January I didn't do much running at all over the winter and my diet slipped and I put back on a lot of what I had lost. I ran sporadically throughout the spring but things were so busy that I never really got in a groove. The other issue is that running with the extra weight has been a challenge. I started back up on a Weight Watchers again a couple weeks ago and have stuck to the plan for the most part. I've lost about 6 pounds and started running a regular 3 times per week.

With a baby due in our house in the middle of October I've decided that it will be best if I get my miles built up early on my body and just maintain the stamina from the end of October until the race in January. I am signed up for a 5k in September and a 10 mile race at the beginning of November. I'm currently looking for a couple more to put in the schedule just to keep the motivation going. I'd like to get a 10k in October some time so that I can have a race time to submit for corral placement and then I'll probably run some sort of race on Thanksgiving.

I have never been a morning person so I do all my running in the evenings. I may have to force myself to start getting out in the morning before work with the baby coming. DW works in the evenings so I will be home alone with the little ones. Either that or I'll have to switch to Wed, Fri, Sun rather than Tue, Thu, Sat. I'd really like to add a 4th day in there but not sure it's in the cards.

Since I've rambled this long I may as well keep going. What kind of gear do you veterans swear by? I am breaking in a new pair of Asics Gel Nimbus 15's and I like them a lot compared to my 14's. For the long runs when I need to have fluids I have a bottle that has a compression sleeve with a hand hold and a zipper pouch to hold gel shots. It's kind of cumbersome on the long runs though. I'm going to see if I can find a friend to ride a bike and carry some fluids for me once I get up to about 8 miles or more. Currently I am in search of a decent (but not overly expensive) pair of running sunglasses. Does anyone have experience with Tifosi? I don't want to spend over $100 that Oakley's or something similar would cost.

SO, how is everyone else's training going?

I'm walking without the cane! :cool1: Nest step, walking without pain. :sad1:

Saw the surgeon last week. When I told him everything was progressing slowly, but progressing, and that I jogged (not well) he smiled. Then he said he wasn't sure I would ever run again.:eek: Glad he told me 18 months after the surgery.

Not looking good for the marathon, but I was cleared for all exercise possible so starting to get some of the extra weight off and strengthening finally.

Excellent idea. I think the "official" runDisney training program for the full marathon starts right around now, so doing a half marathon program will allow you to work it slower, thus reducing the risk of injury or fatigue.

and a 10 mile race at the beginning of November.
And I'll see you there!
Do you have any plans for after the race? We're staying in the city Friday night, but if the race gets done early enough I might head back to the hotel for a shower before the noon checkout time. Not sure about our plans for the afternoon.

With all of the kids' activities going on, I wasn't able to run at night much anymore. I switched to the mornings, now I get to watch the sun come up over Lake Michigan as I run. It's a nice motivator to help me get out.

I wear Saucony ProGrid Omni 10. I think the 11s and 12s are out, but my 10s are still in good shape.
I bought a running/hydration belt at Target for $25 over a year ago. It holds a pretty big (16 oz?) water bottle and the zipper pocket is just big enough to hold my iPhone. I run the ear bud wire up the back of my shirt to keep it from bouncing around. I take it on all of my runs and take a few sips every mile or so. If I fill it completely, it will last me about 12 miles. With the phone in the pocket, it can't hold Gu, but I just put them in my running shorts pockets for runs over 8 miles. I'd like to upgrade to a fancy iFitness belt or something, but honestly, this one does exactly what I need it to do. And as long as I have my earbuds in, I don't hear the water sloshing around in a half empty bottle.
SO, how is everyone else's training going?
Training is going OK. With my WDW trip coming up next week I'm sure I'll fall behind, but I'll have the last half of August and most of September to get ready for the Brewers Half Marathon on 9/28.

CJ, what day is this for, again? Just want to add it to the spreadsheet.

Wow, that was quick, Thank You! :lmao:

time is running out for corral times. So I figured I would ask what everyones plans are.. I know the experienced runners will have their times in. My question is what are all the first timers doing?? Are you running 10ks to try and up your corral or are you just starting in the last and working it from there???
My training hit a standstill with my leg but I am going to push through it and start up again. I am just trying to see where everyone else stands.

I highly encourage any first timers to try to complete a 10k and submit your time to runDisney before November 1st. Last year, corral A started at 5:35 am. The last corral (H) didn't start until 6:24. That's an extra hour of standing around waiting in the morning - not to mention the possibility of the sun coming up and really heating up the course. The earlier you can start, the better. If you can move up, even if it's only a few corrals, it's totally worth it.

Fingers crossed that it won't be as hot this year.

Here it is boys! What we're all working for! Imagine that dangling around your neck next time you don't feel like getting off the couch and hitting the road.

I just realized I don't have a nemesis, and I'm a bit disappointed by that. I would say it was Magpie, but I think that particular user doesn't qualify.
