Is it possible that the owners have been to the house in the last week or so and you didn't notice? Maybe they came to check up on things and set a new timer to throw would-be burglars off.
OR (I'm assuming the police did a perimeter check and didn't actually go inside the house) maybe there is someone hiding in the house and they've just been there since before the snow?
I have to agree with you on this one. I'm a displaced Mainer living in OK, and I never pay attention to my neighbors. In fact, the house two houses over was broken into in the middle of the afternoon and I had no idea. I'm home all day!
The best one I have is I'm REALLY oblivious, I had police hiding in my bushes basically surrounding our neighbors house & I had NO CLUE they were even in my yard. I guess they did their job well of being secretive.
I only found out about it when my neighbor asked me if I saw them. That's what her DH gets for NOT telling 911 it was an accidental call. Then when they called back, he didn't answer (because he was talking on the line to whoever he was talking to & ignored the call waiting) and it was quite a while. It was quite a long story & as I'm listening all I'm thinking is "whew, make sure you stay on the line and tell the operator, OOPS!!!" and "WOW....how did I miss THAT?" I was home during it all and the bushes are not exactly far away from the house. Good thing I didn't decide to go outside then, it probably would have scared me 1/2 to death if I saw them in the bushes.
I was thinking it was a ghost but we have ones that do weird things like that in the house I grew up in....he moved to my parents house when they moved (actually he moved in with all us kids too -- that ghost gets around!).

Growing up we had a ghost too! Its was named "Not me!". And he liked to drink the last of the milk and put the jug back in the fridge. Or lick the filling out of the double stuff oreos and put them back into the package He also left lights on in a room when he walked out
Did the power go out at all or even blink when you were having bad weather? The light in my bedroom is on a remote and the "default" is for the light to be on as long as the switch is on. So if the power goes out for even a millisecond the light turns on. Really rude awakening if we have a power outage or blink in the middle of the night!

She can always rent it. It was my dad's house and we wanted her to have it so when he decided to sell it and move to Florida we bought it. My grandmother lives in the house on the other side of that ~ and we hope to buy that house for youngest DD.... fair is fair right?
Maybe she won't want to live next door to us... who knows... right now she wants to live WITH us forever and marry her daddy....
I'm thinking if she has the kind of common sense I hope to raise her with a free house will be a good thing.
