Neighbor's fence...questions

We have a fenced in yard btw. The "pretty side" faces our neighbors (I didnt' feel right putting up a fence and showing them the "not so pretty side") one neighbor asked me if she could hang things on that side of the fence- I said "no problem". Do they benefit from the fence? Yes, they have a dog too and they have the "pretty" side of our fence. Do we ask them to chip in for the maintenance- no. It's our fence.

At our first house, our neighbor helped pay for the fence. We only needed a gate and the fence on his side of our property. We were going to get a chain link...he offered to help pay so we could get wooden, since he had to look at too. We accepted his offer and we moved 12 years ago, they are still there. It was a good deal for him.

We paid for our own fence here. It has to be 6 in on the property line. The only time we talk to the neighbors about it is when DH had to stain it and he would be on their property.

Also we have neighbors that have 2 fences...one on neighbor A's property and the other on neighbor B's property. Yes that's two fences back to back...no squabbling then...

Where we live the fences are shared. We really have no choice, nor do our neighbors. If something happens to the fence we split the cost.

We put up a fence at our old house and had to get zoning approval for it and there were requirements on how far in from the property line the fence had to be (at least 5 feet), which side the 'pretty side of the fence' had to face (towards neighbors) etc. Nobody paid but us. We put it up to keep neighbor dogs out

I have 3 sides that have fences- 2 I split with my neighbors and one I bought on my own since no one was living there at the time- we got the "good side" - there is no way I am paying for a fence and not having the good side to me....it also goes on the property line here- 5 feet in is insane...so you put yours five feet in and your neighbor puts theirs 5 feet in- who mows the 10 feet in the middle of them?? that must look really crappy for have 2 fences 10 feet from each other!

I'm thinking you need the fence to contain your dogs. If the neighbor decided not to replace the fence you would have to put your own up and pay the WHOLE bill instead of half.

I agree, if my neighbors fence falls down today, I will have to pay to put it back up as I know she doesn't have the money to do it and I have to have fence up to keep my dog from running away.

Of course I will get the pretty side of it this go around.

I am on the Gulf Coast too. We always split the cost of a fence. At my old house, the fence would be half pretty side, half ugly side. They would turn about every ten feet. At my new house, everyone has a detached garage, so the ugly side is the side that is hidden by the garage.
