Neighbors Dog

We have lived here over 3 years and never had a problem with anyone. A family bought a house a couple houses away from ours and move there about 6 months ago. This house doesn't have a fence. They have this small chihuahua dog that they let out and do not supervise him . Today I was coming home and had to slam on my break as the dog run to the middle of the road. This is the 3rd time that we had to stop because we almost run the dog over. She came out hearing the brakes and the dog bark, at this point I had gotten out of the car to see if I hit the dog . She says hi and calls the dog over without even saying sorry! So I said to her this is the 3rd time I almost run your dog over she answer, "well run him over then" and turn around and went inside. I am not sure what else to do. Not only is this dog all over the place but when you try to get close he tries to bite. I am so aggravated about the situation. Any ideas what to do?

Edit: I called animal control and said they couldn't do anything unless they find the dog roaming.

You are risking others around you that are driving by slamming on your brakes.

Please be careful and think of other drivers before you slam on your brakes for an animal.

They don't have a leash law in your town? If you hit the dog and its not on a leash then you are not to blame. I know it is awful, but it's their responsibility to keep the dog under control.

Ask 'em if they would take responsibility if you live trap it 'n if they would, then get one from them 'n trap the li'l varmint.

I do agree it's not worth being hit or getting hit by someone to save a dog that is really not valued by its owner. Makes me sad that the owners wouldn't care enough to protect their own animal.

I'd run over her, the owner. The dog in my avatar is a resuce from NC, she was a pup just running into the road living under an abandoned car when I found her. Sweetest dog you could ever meet.

Sounds like your neighbor's dog is in for a short life if nothing is done.That must be very frustrating to see and not be able to help the dog. All I can think is maybe a rescue if she would relinquish ownership. It is not the dog's fault he doesn't know better it is the idiot owner.

I agree. Call Animal Control every single time that dog is running around. We had the same situation with our new neighbors last year except their dogs were not little. The last straw for me was waking up to go out to get the paper and 6 inches from the bottom step of my front porch was a giant pile of poo. I picked it up with a shovel, put it on their porch, and knocked on the door and told them I brought their dogs poo back for them. Then, I started calling Animal Control every time their dogs were loose. After the 3rd time, and the fine increasing every time, the finally started tying their dogs up. Now we have noticed they got rid of their 2 large dogs in exchange for 3 smaller dogs that they let run all over the place. Needless to say, it is going to be an interesting summer.

An ankle-biter is not worth injuring yourself (by slamming your brakes on).

If need be, hit the dog.

That's one of the first things you learn as a driver here...hit the animal in the road to spare yourself and others injury or possible death.

I should added that we live in a sub division so the street I was driving on is not crowded and I had no one behind me it is rare when there is someone else driving because we live close to the end of the sub division. I could never run over a dog intentionally even if it wasn't intentionally I would be devastated. I love dogs.

My advice would be to not risk injury to you OR the dog. You can report the owners for neglect. If the dog isnt licensed, running loose etc, you can even trap it.

Just remember, the dog isnt the villain in this story, the owner is.

I agree with you I don't think is the dogs fault. I just wish he had a different owner. The dog does have a collar with tags.

Have the animal control phone number handy and call it every time you see the dog off the neighbors property.

Are the other neighbors experiencing the same frustration as you? If so, come to an agreement amongst you to all call animal control when they see the dog off property.

I'd hate to see you run over the dog, but sometimes you have no choice. I guess, I'd just go extra slow expecting the dog to run out.

Just keep calling animal control!!!

She can report all she wants. It doesn't mean anything will be done about it.

The owners know their dog is running all over the neighborhood and have chosen to continue letting the dog run loose.

And yes, if it comes down to letting myself or my family get injured in a car wreck or hitting an animal, humans will always win.

NO the dog isn't friendly the first time I tried to catch him he tried to bite me.

She already said it tries to bite when she approaches. I would call animal control every time it is loose. I would also ask animal control for a live trap to use or rent so if it enters your property you can trap it. It is true that Animal Control in many areas will have their hands tied unless they find the animal running loose. But if you and your neighbors call over & over they will start patrolling and will eventually get the dog while off her property. The squeaky wheel gets the grease they will get sick of hearing from you.

Do you know if the dog has it's shots? You could always let the little **** bite you and file charges on her for having a dangerous dog....even though the running in the street is much more likely to cause injury to someone...most authorities take dog bites more seriously.
