neighbors cats

Yes, we have neighborhood cats that use our wood chipped flower bed as a litter box. Lovely. Thanks so much.

Yeah, there's an area of our yard that I'm going to start calling "Cat-Pee Corner".

agnes!

cats drive me nuts....I can't stand them all over our neighborhood....we have people who have many outdoor cats who just roam free, aren't taken care of and the owners simply leave a food and water dish on the property. They should be inside or on a leash as dogs have to be. Wish animal control would come scoop them up.

Contact your local animal control. Usually if an animal is running around unchecked then they're fair game. Animal control can lend you live traps (some places even allow you to humanely eliminate nuissance feral animals). Trap them and turn them over. If the owners trully care they'll come bail them out and possibly keep their pets better controlled in the future.

You don't "keep" them outside, you allow them to go outside to play like you do with a dog - but cats are not leashed animals for many reasons...

Who said anything about "leashed animals?" I was referring to people who keep their animals outside all the time and I don't agree with that.

But I must say...I have never heard of taking a cat outside to play "like a dog." That's a new one right there!:rotfl:

I said that you allow them to go outside to play, like you would a dog. Not sure how you got from there to where you arrived... :confused3

That's exactly what I meant. Sorry I worded it differently and you got confused.

They will not do this to help you trap a neighbor's cat. You would have to lie to them...

We llive in the country, and almost every here has cats. They keep many types of undesirable wildlife at bay - but only if they are allowed outside. We bring our cat inside at night, and she spends most of the day inside, too (unless we are outside, as she prefers to be with us, wherever we are).

For those who have cats going potty in your yard - take action. It wouldn't bother me one bit if someone turned a hose on my cat for this purpose. She has a litter box in the house and plenty of space on our property for this sort of thing.

One last note - dogs are a far greater concern to a neighborhood than cats, especially when lazy pet owners are taken into account. I have never stepped into a pile of fresh cat poo or been attacked by a cat...

I've been attacked by a cat. :lmao:

I laugh now, but for years I was afraid of cats, especially big orange tabbies. :scared1:

We don't have any HOA rules or such like that.

Our dog has free run of our lawn and does not leave it for anything. That in turn keeps a few roaming cats away..

Basically the dog chases away the cats, geese etc and keeps our lawn clear.

We really dislike cats anyway, so seeing the dog chasing them off the lawn is always good for a laugh.

For the record he is a sheltie, so not like he will hurt the cat. He just wants to herd/chase them.

Plus it is our lawn, so if neighbors can't control their pets, we got the right to run them off our property.

Have you read the entire thread? Many people have suggested as much.

If you have cats (or dogs) in your neighborhood that are bothersome, there are many things that you can do to correct the problem for little or no cost. It would be great if pet owners paid more attention to their cats or dogs. Both can become a problem. But I live in an area with many cats and dogs, and they are not a problem for me or my family. I take action...

Yes they will. If the animal is loose, animal control will assist. A loose cat is just as capabe of contracting diseases (like rabies) then any dog. It's a health issue. Once again this depends on jurisdictions.

I didn't get confused. I read it to mean exactly what you wrote...

How is what I wrote any different than what you wrote? You said you take you cat outside to play like you would do with a dog, correct? How do you play with your cat? With a ball? A plush toy? Sounds like something you'd do with a dog.

But by all means, nit pick my wording...if it's that important to you...

I can't even get animal control to come check on my neighbors dogs who are cooped up inside for DAYS at a time. The neighbor has 2 houses. She spends MAYBE 5 hours a week at this house but has 2 dogs that live here along with "her" cats.

Yes I have read the entire thread.Condescending much? You were replying to *MY* post, and I did not mention leased animals, so your mentioning it to me had no relevance whatsoever to *MY* point.

Whatever. You are obviously looking for a fight today. I'm done playing with you.

I will take your word that they do it where you live, but cats roaming the neighborhood are not considered by anyone to be strays when they are known to be a neighbor's. A roaming neighborhood cat is not treated as a stray by animal control. You would have to lie (almost anywhere) and claim that they are a stray to get them to help you trap the cat.

And, if you knowingly trapped a neighbor's cat and they are harmed, be prepared to be sued and to pay for damages.

My only advice is "Squeaky wheel gets the oil". Make your reports written and send it to them. If still no action, talk to the council member, mayor or city manager. That usually lights a fire.

why is it acceptable for cats - not strays - to roam the neighborhood?
Because cats have been used in America for hundreds of years to control rodents. Live in the country without cats and you have mice, snakes, skunks, etc. almost 100% of the time.

FWIW, when we lived on Long Island, we did not allow our cats outside. There was too great a risk of them being hit by a car, and almost no risk of rodents...
