How would you feel if this happened to you? You have family/friends over and you're all outside enjoying the pool, playing music. The neighbor calls the sheriff about your loud music, not once, but twice. Would you turn it down and feel bad about disturbing the neighbor? Or would you be mad at the neighbor for trying to spoil your fun?

I have a cousin (older than me) in Texas who posted on her FB page this morning about having such a good time with family and friends at their pool, but that the neighbor called the sheriff on them twice for their loud music. She thought it was funny. I didn't post anything back, because I didn't think it was funny. There's nothing wrong with having fun, but if music is loud enough to disturb the neighbor then it's probably too loud.

What do you think?

I guess it would depend on what time of day the party was going on. During the day/early evening not a big deal, late at night - then it's rude.
Whenever I plan on having a loud party, I usually just invite the neighbors as well, that way they're not disturbed by the loud noise.

Depends on time of day/night. During the day I would be a bit upset w/neighbor, but after 9:00PM you shouldn't hear your neighbors party too much.

Depends......the people that used to own the house we live in called the police if someone sneezed. They were nightmare neighbors!! (We called the city to ask a question about the pound behind us and they actually started celebrating in the background when they learned they had moved! :rotfl2:) So if it is that kind of situation I would probably laugh it off too.
Now if they are nice neighbors I would have turned down the stereo....heck I would have invited them over!!!!

I think around here if the sheriff has to show a second time for the complaint they may issue a noise ticket if it is justifiable. Not sure though never been in that situation.;)

edit to add.....I wonder where the people that lived here before us moved to??????:lmao:

I'd feel bad and turn down the music. And they wouldn't have to call a second time. The sheriff must have felt there was a legitimate complaint the first time to be willing to make a second trip. Too many people only think about themselves and not others around them.

I think they should have invited the neighbor in the first place. :rotfl:

Honestly, I would need to know more info before I could form an opinion. Was your cousin actually violating the local noise ordinance? Maybe her neighbor is just a cranky sour puss who complains about everything, even when most reasonable people would not.

Did the sheriff think the noise was too loud or not?

In her FB post she said the sheriff actually laughed and called the neighbor an old coot.

I don't know about the local noise ordinance, she didn't say anything about that, or what time of the day it was, if it was afternoon or at night.

If I was a good neighbor and not normally loud, I would expect them to just bare with me for this one time

As long as it's not happening at some crazy time like 2 or 3 in the morning, I think music is a part of summer. People have outdoor parties/cookouts and play music. Maybe the lady is mad that she wasn't invited. :rotfl:

We are in an apartment, so our situation is a bit different.

If we are having a party, we go to our neighbors and let them know a few days ahead. Most of them do the same to us. Saves a lot of headaches down the road. Everyone usually calms down by eleven, but never later than midnight (apartment noise cutoff on the weekends per lease agreement).

BUT we have one neighbor who refuses to talk to anyone, blares music from their car and their home (once it was so loud, it rattled the microwave plate). So, the last time it happened, at 3 am, I called the police. They were here in about 10 minutes, and he couldn't hear them banging on his front door (I could, in my living room). I guess eventually he heard them, because they were outside talking to him about the noise. He hasn't done it since, though he still "booms" all day. :headache:

Because of him, I really want to move. This job works out for dh, we're moving in August.

The guy below my apartment one summer in college (I sublet an apartment) was like that. My roommate's bedroom floor would shake and things would fall off her dresser. We would jump on the floor and yell at him because he still did it during the day and the police and apartment said there was nothing they could do between 8am-10pm.

My friend had a LOUD party for her birthday in her backyard. She had a DJ and a dance floor. It was a like a club in her backyard.
She avoided the neighbor complaints by inviting them all to the party.

If she is older than you-I'm guessing 50's -cant imagine someone that age allowing profane music (that would be my only complaint in the daytime)
Sounds like you might be jealous-if she and the sheriff thought it funny-then it really must be an "old coot neighbor"

I never said the music was profane, and how does it seem that I am jealous? :confused3 That I wasn't invited to the party? She lives in Texas! :rotfl:

She thought it was funny-you didnt and you weren't even there!
If the Sheriff thought it funny too-why dont you?

After 9pm it still wouldn't bring the cops out around here- on weekdays they would come if it was after 11 and on weekends the noise ordinance is after midnight. So you can have music blasting or even cut your lawn up until midnight LOL. Oh and it is also before 8am-you can't cut lawns etc before 8am.

If this happened to me, I'd think I was an obnoxious jerk and I'd turn off the music and stop annoying my neighbors.
