Needing some positive thoughts and support

My nephew was rushed to the hospital this afternoon after having a severe allergic reaction to something in a cookie he ate. He does have a peanut allergy but in his 13 years he's never reacted like this. He is in emergency right now and is gratefully breathing normally once more but is still being monitored closely as he broke out in hives/rashes on his whole body and had some pretty bad swelling.

I am doing the Auntie pacing thing right now and of course this has occurred when my hubby is working opposite shifts to me. the one thing I am grateful for is that my parents have my Mom's cousin over so they are somewhat occupied while we all wait for updates.

He's never had to carry one before but from now on we'll need to always have an epipen handy because I cannot handle hearing what I heard from my brother again! I was a mess for a while until my hubby was able to call me back and calm me.

Oh gosh. What a terrible experience for him, and you.

Anaphalactic reaction can be a terrifying thing. Carrying an epi pen is a great precaution.

I hope all is well as fast as it went sour.

My nephew has been released to the relief of everybody and is soundly asleep at home as he is extremely drained. One eye is still nearly swollen shut, otherwise the majority of his swelling has gone down and the hives have pretty much subsided.

Needless to say my brother and sis in law aged a few days this afternoon seeing their son in the state he was in but all is well. He gets to take the rest of the week off school to recuperate and has already updated his Facebook that he is home.

He reacted after he ate a cookie. He is allergic to peanuts; this we have known since he was a toddler and he is always extremely careful. Normally if anything has peanuts in it he can feel a slight tingle in his mouth as he chews his first bite. He knows if that happens he spits it out and in the past he has been fine. There was no tingle this time but he was hit pretty fast and hard after he ate the cookie and if there is a label he is always reading what the ingredients are. It was a chaotic night that I didn't ask my brother if the cookie was a packaged one with a label or just something he got at his school cafeteria/another kid.

He is going to go to an allergist and re-run the gambit of allergy tests to see if he picked up a new allergy or if his peanut allergy has suddenly gotten worse/body reacting differently since he's going through puberty.

Dad mentioned when he spoke to B tonight he asked if he wanted Nonno (Grandpa) to bring him anything when he goes over to visit him tomorrow. "No cookies" were his reply.

I hadn't been that scared in a long time; when my brother called me the strain in his voice was just as bad as hearing the words that B was in the emergency. You don't ever want to hear that, especially not about kids in the family. And of course my parents were contacting me separately to "Call your brother get an update" as I think they were both too scared to call in case he wasn't reacting to meds.

I am going to give B a massive hug when I see him this weekend, that's for sure!

Yikes, I'm sorry to hear this. Where did the cookie come from? (Was it prepackaged, or were you a restaurant?)

The company I used to work for used to deliver lunches to private schools, and when we were serving cookies we pretty much had to stop everything we were doing, wash everything down and start from scratch for this one school because they had over 20 students with peanut allergies. Apparently most places don't change their equipment when mixing dough between two different types of cookies (which I tend to think is kinda gross....but it saves the companies time). This, however, was not the case with the company I was with because of liability issues. The peanut cookies we did send to the school all had to be individually wrapped and the kids were forced to sit at the "allergy table". I guess what I'm getting at is depending on where you're at, even if you order a chocolate chip cookie, there's a really good chance you're still getting residue from peanut oil in those cookies. Sad, but true.

I'm sure he'll be fine soon.

Sometimes with severe allergies, they intensify over time with exposure. That could be part of what is going on here too.

I am so relieved for you that the child is now ok. Well, I'm sure that at 13 he doesn't appreciate the "child" tag, eh?

Just very grateful that he's ok now. Hopefully, the allergists will be able to determine his true status now.

Heck, I'd be afraid to let the kid out of my sight!

His allergies were never that bad but we'll have to see now what happens when he goes through re-testing. They last did the tests on him probably 4 years ago? It will be his third round of testing for allergies I think.

They may need to bar peanut butter from the house which I am certain his two sisters will be quite upset about initially as they are peanut butter fiends but will get over it. I don't know how the youngest in the house (8 this weekend BAH she is getting so 'old' ) took the news about her older brother being in the emergency but the middle child who is only 1 year younger than B took it quite hard.

I am waiting to call their house to see how B or maybe I should just check FB to see if he has any status updates
