In March 07 my daughter and husband will be part of an Orchestra tour group, all high school age. They will be staying at the ASMU. What advice would you have me give to the chaperones and teacher going for the kids so they don't become Pop Warner kids?

All together there are a total of 40 people going, I know the adult to kid ratio is about 2 to 8.

The Teacher has actually asked for advice and most people are just giving him ride advice.

:thanks: a ton in advance!

While some kids get out of control…. if the rules are stated and consequences follow up on I don’t think there should be an issue...kids notice quickly if they get away with things.....Make sure all students know insubordinate behavior will not be tolerated (that goes for behavior towards chaperones and all hotel/park employees)

we always set time when they need to be in their rooms, and an adult would have to let them out in the am....Plus we always had hotel management well informed about what rooms our kid were in, and if any noise issue was reported we wanted to be called immediately....

and in the end two words Duck tape......
at night all we always taped them into their rooms...that way chaperones could tell just by glancing if anyone even opened the door...

I do believe the issue with the pop kids has as much to do with the parents as the kids

Common courtesy. That's about it. :)

1) Remember you aren't the only ones there, and not everyone has 'teenaged enthusiasm' or finds it enchanting.

2) Respect the fact there are small children sleeping at 9pm, and others sleeping in at 8am.

3) It isn't cute or funny or cool to scream, push, sing at the top of your voice, etc.

4) Act as if your mother was with you and you'll be fine. ;)

My high school band went to WDW in 1996. We were under strict rules, and if we violated any of them, we would be sent home at our parents' expense (seriously, and one kid did, it was infamous).

For the hotel, we had tape put on the outside of our doors to make sure we were in when we were supposed to be. The chaperones checked in on us at like 11pm and then pulled off the tape in the morning.

Also, while we were not required to be with chaperones at all times, we were required to meet several times a day. Our band director checked in with first aid and guest relations to make sure no one was sick or misbehaving.

There were over 120 kids in our band. I don't know how many chaperones there were, but we kept running into them everywhere, and it worked out very well.

Honestly, my brother and I would have never thought to act out, but we knew some people who were likely to. I truly feel the reason there was only that one kid (and it was not in a Disney park that he acted out. We were in our busses at King Henry's Feast and he lifted the fire escape on the roof and climbed out! Punk!) is because the kids knew, unequivocally, that they would be sent home immediately, and incur the wrath of parents who had to pay for the airfare!

I hope they have a great time! That trip is one of my best high school memories!

I would also suggest -

No running in the parks or at the resort. Wherever you are trying to get to will still be there.

Noise carries at night and in the early morning. If the grounds of the resort are quiet, so should you. Laughing and talking outside your room is magnified to the rooms around you.

No chants, cheers or singing in the queue lines. The people around you can't escape.

Bus all your counter service tables yourselves. Push in your chairs before you leave.

And I'll add that most high school groups are fine. But they are at Disney World and away from their parents. They are allowed to have fun without going overboard.
