Need your thoughts on joining DVC vs. Disney deluxes

Great question.

We've stayed in many deluxe resorts at the concierge level (GF/RPC for 2 weeks, Poly, YC, etc). IMHO, Disney does not do a good job in concierge. We have also stayed at many resorts around the world in concierge, and they have all been superior to WDW. We love the Four Seasons, especially the club floor in Maui, and the service is so much better. IMHO Disney concierge is not worth the $$$.

We decided to join the DVC because we love WDW. Our favorite resort is the BC/YC, so the BCV was a perfect fit for us. We want a good-sized room and the villas meet our needs. We joke that now that we provide our own snacks and make our own PS's, the service level has improved greatly! ;) I can also stumble from the bedroom in the morning and get coffee in the kitchen, as opposed to stumbling to a crowded lounge, scaring people and taking it back to the room! ;)

Good luck with your decision.

Thx for the laugh MJS. Yes that is particular is a great advantage to your DVC membership (as it is for the other concierge guests :p ).
Maistre Gracey also makes a good point that you can still use your points on the occasional Concierge level stay and that is roughly as good a deal as cash most of the time (except that the cash outlay has already been made in the form of the initial purchase and the maintenence fees; and you can deduct some of the latter).

Great thread. Thx for bringing it up. Good luck with your calculations.

I have nothing to add to this discussion, since we've never stayed in Concierge. I just wanted to say thanks to Sherri for contributing that picture to the boards. If that one doesn't make you smile, nothing will! Diana

We looked at DVC when it first opened but I was sceptical of "time shares". We have always stayed at Contemp, GF, YC, BC, etc and have used conceirge a few times. I remember when a CR room was $79/night ! We finally just bought 170 pts at BCV and am looking forward to using them. I figure the points cost $6-7/year average with purchase and fees for the life of the contract. So you are getting a premium room for a reasonable amount. The thing I liked most about concierge was breakfast and afternoon wine/chese/snacks. With a DVC home we will have breakfast in the room (cereal, fruit, pastry, bagels etc.) and snacks whenever we want. We just have make a little more effort to get them but then we're set. If you like WDW and are going to go every year or two then I think it makes sense.

How much do you save with the AP discount?
How many points are required for nightly stays at Disney deluxe concierge level?

Thanks,

Phyllis

Don't have the book in front of me, but I happen to recall looking up AKL Conceirge for June and it was 52 points.

Well, what we do is stay 5 nights in a one bedroom at one resort and then in a studio (to conserve points) on the weekend at a different resort. We also are staying at AKL on our next trip because we ran out of points:eek:

So you could just buy the minimum and stay 4 - 5 nights in a one bedroom and then stay a few nights either before or after at a different hotel with concierge.

We are a family of five and I will not stay in a regular hotel room any longer. Concierge at a deluxe is out until the wife and I get to go alone. But we like the homey atmosphere of a one or two BR and the convenience of the kitchen and washer dryer. We just move in. Plus, the money you must spend for accomodations each year. We just decided to pre-pay it and break even after about 7 years.

I'm also considering DVC ownership.

I did a search on this Forum for more information. It appears that there is something called Disney Collection which allows DVC owners to reserve Disney resort stays using DVC points.

I couldn't find a complete Disney Collection point list on this forum but I was able to find an old July 2003 posting regarding the Polynesian

In value season the points required are (weekday/weekend): garden view 33/60, lagoon view 42/76, concierge lagoon view 50/90. In other seasons the points are higher still.

You can compare this to the DVC Points Chart to help you with your decision. I also read that the point requirement for the Disney Collection can change every year unlike DVC point requirement which doesn't change.

Good Luck
