Hi everyone,

well i was happily updating my pre-trippie today thinking it was all going to come together and now a mighty old clanging spanner has been thrown in the works. we are supposed to leave in 24 days for our wdw trip, just me and OH, colin.
colin phones me this afternoon to tell me his mum has been diagnosed with MRSA, she left hospital about 4 weeks ago now after having a heart valve replaced and an angioplasty. all seemed well except she had a wound in her leg that would just not heal. it was dressed every day by the nurse but just kept leaking. finally today confirmation she has MRSA. she has been given anti-biotics but i have heard that these are not fool proof in MRSA cases.

Also the building firm Colin works for lost 2 big contracts last week, their school summer holiday work and 2 people have been laid off. It appears that more may have to go. its not a big firm to start off with and he has been confided in that he is 3rd on the list if cuts are made.

Colin obviously will not leave his mum if she is not well enough, he is in charge of her daily meds and care. and if he does lose his job in the next 2 weeks then money issues take precedence and he will not come. although in principle it is all paid for, he wont come without spending money and he wont come knowing he wont be able to relax for worrying about home.

Our airline tickets are with united but of course you cant change a name on an airline ticket, it is a case of cancelling and re-booking but all flights for our dates are now in the expensive bracket and i cant imagine anyone having money just lying around to come with me.

so right now part of me feels like having a selfish paddy and screaming (in private of course, its not Colins fault) and part of me just wants everything to be ok for Colin and his mum. This man has not had a holiday in 6 years and my god does he need a break after the last year.

vent over. if anyone knows anything about MRSA and recovery times fill me in please. if anyone has good advice or jammy ways to change names on plane tickets let me know although i know this one is a long shot. and if anyone has words of wisdom let me have them. why does life have to be such a struggle?!

Oh Claire....:sad1: I hope things work out hun & that Colin's mum is ok.

I can only imagine how you feel, go in a quiet dark corner & have a good cry, rant & scream. As you say it's no ones fault but letting it out will make you feel better. Sending you lots of hugs & pixiedust. :wizard::hug::wizard::hug::wizard::hug::wizard:

I know a couple of people who have had MRSA after an operation and they were both fine, they suffered no complications, I think the most annoying part for them was that they were told their bedding had to be washed everyday! I think it was a few weeks before they were told the infection had gone but at no point was it serious.

As for the redundancy, as the holiday is paid for I would encourage him to still go, you never know what is round the corner and he could find a new job really quikcly in which case he has forfeited the trip for nothing. Leta face it all you have to pay for is food and if you have to you can eat really cheaply.

Hope it all works out  Sending PD :wizard::wizard::wizard:

Hope it all works out for you:hug:

Blimey Claire you certainly get put through it  I think you are allowed to think of yourself sometimes

Brians mum had MRSA after a hip operation - it did take her a couple of courses to get rid of the MRSA and she was fine. The would did take a while to heal though!!!

I hope you and Colin get to go on your holiday - I am sending a truck load of Pixie Dust your way

 I'm so sorry that I have no advice for you hun

:wizard::wizard: Sending you lots of pixie-dust, and I hope everything works out ok :wizard::wizard:

No words of wisdom from me hun, just lots of  hope things work out xx
Thanks nat:hug:

Thanks hun, I havent cried yet, I think the point he says point blank hes not coming is when the tears come. god help me if i have a glass of wine though, the worst comes out then;)

Thanks jen, actually we are on free dining so even thats not a big issue, snack credits can be used for breakfast etc, but i had already budgeted to cover any extra food costs, tips etc. i think with Colin he is just too proud to ever rely on me for money, and to go all that way and not be able to buy anything would do him in. he would not have a good time without having back up money. of course i will be encouraging him till the very last minute. but i have to be very careful i dont come off selfish when he is dealing with so much stress, there are more important things in life than holidays I guess.

Thanks for the advice regarding MRSA, i just spoke to colins mum and she hasnt been told anything, not about bed sheets, or what it is really or anything, she just knows she has it. the good news is she doesnt feel ill with it, she is taking 2 different types of anti-biotics and seems quite positive about it all. and i know she will be on my side pushing him onto the plane, we both know he needs this. will pass on the info about the bed sheets:hug:

Sending pixie dust like the others :wizard::wizard::wizard: I really hope this all turns out ok for you both

Oh Claire hun  I hope everything works out fine for you and for Colin.

Sometimes in certain circumstanes i would of thought the airline could change names on flight tickets even if they added on a small charge.

They have brought in new rules now for security that you are not allowed to do this, assuming its to do with 9/11 etc. you literally have to cancel and rebook the ticket, the only thing an airline could do as a goodwill gesture is keep it at the same price (has been known but rare) or maybe offer you a voucher towards another flight. But because I did this on a non-refundable, non-exchangable fare to keep costs down it does not look good. However i have to keep positive and really hope it doesnt come to that.
I know in my mind that whatever happens I am going, be it solo, with a friend or with colin. I have a friend that lives out in orlando that will keep me company for most of it, i am meeting up with rachel one afternoon at epcot and i have toured the parks by myself before. I will be fine and get my trip, i just predict mass tears at the airport if he doesnt come:confused3

Thanks gemma, claire and beth for the pixiedust and good wishes xx

Will the travel insurance cover any of the costs, Claire, if things can't get sorted? No advice, really, from here (surprisingly enough for me - I've normally got an opinion on everything ;)), just hoping it works out and your trip goes to plan :goodvibes
