Need to vent...

Three words: Books on CD! Makes a huge difference! With your son being 11, it shouldn't be tough to find some that please everybody.

Re those who noted the cost/time of the Auto Train: Yes, if you are on a switch-off-and-drive-all-night commando mission, the Auto Train is slower and more expensive than driving. But you will/should not be traveling that way; you would probably have two hotel nights between NYC and Orlando. The train is overnight, and, taking the train, you have zero hotel nights between NYC and Orlando. Consequently, compared to the hotel costs, extra meal costs, and extra gas, there is almost no net cost to using the Auto Train (assuming you travel coach).

You're an adult. You'll be just fine. I've driven many many trips all on my own. I have 4 kids. I even took one trip 14 hours to my sister's at Christmas with 3 kids and I was 32 weeks pg and did it all by myself.

Make sure you have a cellphone and a roadside assistance program and you're all good.

I haven't read all the posts, but I had to drive my mom from Houston to Pennsylvania once with just my DD13, and my mom is a horrible passenger. She won't fly, doesn't like to be the one driving, but is anxious the entire time I am driving. It took us three days. My DD and dropped her off in Penn. and drove back just the two of us.

If your DH can't take that much time off, could he take a shorter amount of time and fly down for part of you time at Disney While you drive there and back. We are thinking that we may have to do something like this for our next trip because my DH will not be able to take off a large block of days.

I just got back from a road trip with just my DS9. There is no reason that an Adult female cant travel safely alone.(and you won't even be alone)

I love the AT, too! But, it sounds like OP is ready for the drive now! And if she changes her mind, she can always book the AT for the trip home! :) (not a bad idea, actually...)

Well...told Mom yesterday and she was completely unfazed that he was not going to come with us and we were on our own. When I called to take him off the reservation the CSM spoke to billing for me and they did not charge me a change fee to take him off even though we are inside that window :) Trip is still on and I feel better about it. My son still doesn't like the idea that he is not coming either, but sure doesn't want us to stay home. Should change the ticker to say Mom - Ryan - Grandma Explore the World in August 2012 but am too lazy to go make another one - LOL.
