Hello there - I had posted here a while back that Key West Cruisers located in Key West would give conch rates to the cruisers that rented from them if there was proof such as my business card - I was told that all that needed to be done was to give them a phone call, a pickup would be done and delivered to and from the ship - I just found out that there can be NO reservations and it is on a first come first served and last but not least - NO DISCOUNTs as promised by the owner's - now they will provide service from the ship and back but all that I said they promised me is nil - sorry - I just didn't want anyone to feel that I had not been truthful -
I also can not find one tee shirt shop close to Mallory Square that is above board.
I still recommend Vinny from Touch of Gold and Shelly from Key Cat for water sports of all type - they have more than gone beyond their promises to treat the cruisers with conch rates or better.
Thanks for letting me be disappointed but I felt in best interest - you had to know so you wouldn't be upset with me.
Hugsssssss to all
Luv ya
Shirley

A "conch" is a native of the Florida Keys... especially like Key West. Our dear friend Shirley grew up in Key West and still knows many of the old locals there even though she doesn't live there anymore. In any locale where the economy depends on the tourist dollar, rates charged to tourists tend to be a little higher than what the locals (or "conchs") would be willing to pay. But many merchants will charge a lower rate for local people out of courtesy to their neighbors. Shirley has graciously arranged to have that courtesy extended to her extended network of friends who enjoy each others' company on this board.

Dave: re: "conch rates"

thanks so much for the info! I have enjoyed your DCL tribute site frequently and appreciate all your help. thanks again. :D

Shirley, you really are a wonder!

I do have a question- if not mallory square, are there shirt shops you would say are ok? (big polo addict here)

Shirley, you are SO great to check out everything for us. Don't worry about anyone having any concerns about YOU not being truthful. If anyone has a problem, then they are not a true "DIS-er!"

Thanks for everything you do for us.

Jeanny :D

Hey there all - man didn't I sound really furious when I wrote that letter - guess cause I was told I would be called right back - never received a call and when I call them back - it was like "oh well" - I was born and raised in Key West - with Key West being a 2 by 4 island - noone dared to do anything but be right on their word - had to be since there never was any place to run to :D - all those that were in business, always stood by their words as truth - there were many tourists that came to Key West and they were treated with much respect - noone ever took advantage of any situation - I guess this is what I no longer understand about my home town - guess I see so much that I am not use to - anyhow I have found the Clinton Center which is right next to Mallory Square not only a neat place to go, but they have great tee shops or did for businesses come and go down there - you further you get "up town" that is Duval Street, the more calmer the salesperson - I have found products better away from Mallory Square - I have found Moped Hospital to be an honorable business (forgot to mention them) they have mopeds and bikes - anyhow this time when I go down, I will be a "tourist" since I do not have to worry about my dear uncle any longer - next time around, I will have plenty of time to check things out.
Luv ya all
Always
Shirley

Hi Shirley - thanks for your help
How far of a walk is it to Mallory Square from the dock? If I remember correctly it is quite a ways. Is Mallory Square where they have that buoy saying "southern most point"?

Mallory Square is located at the North point of Key West - this is where the Magic docks - the Southermost part is at the end of Whitehead street which is exalty 2 miles south from where the Magic would be - Southermost point is nice - this is where Albert Cash, an ol' conch, has carried on a family business of selling conch shells etc to not only the locals but tourist as well - he plays tunes on a conch shell that is so awesome - in fact when Norm and I married down at the Southermost Point, Albert played the wedding march from the conch shell - just tell him you are friends of Norman and Shirley Hicks - he is one of the happiest people there - always with a smile on his face - a joy to meet -
another tibit of Key West
:D
Always
Shirley
