need to cancel march res, help with options

Advice please. My daughter's band (college) has a mandatory trip during her spring break and they changed the dates to our vacation days. I just found out today. What are my options? I used April use year points, both the current year and banked points. I understand the points will expire March 31st unless used. It is rather late to try to rent them. Can they be used for a future RCI trip?

There isn't anything you can do with the banked points at this point. There is an option to have them put towards future use through RCI, but I am pretty sure you have to use them to book something that is within 60 days of your expected check-in. Meaning if you booked today, it would have to be for a check-in within the next 60 days. The downside to that is that it cannot be within 60 days of your new Use Year. You are probably inside of that window, or getting very close. So you may end up losing those Banked Points. As far as renting them goes, it will pretty much be a crap shoot. As long as you are more than 30 days out from your check-in, your 2017 Use Year points will be placed back into your account no problem. It is a very confusing as to how they actually handle it, and I am not 100% certain as to how it works. I would call Member Services and explain to them what you have going on, and they will tell exactly what options you have.

You might have luck trying to rent out your reservation. I've seen folks renting out short-term points for $6-$11 per point, so that might be your last resort option.

I think I will end up trying to rent out the reservations (I did not know you were allowed to rent actual reservations), or if that does not work, go by myself or gift them to a family member. Right now, I am pretty cold so going somewhere warm, even alone, sounds very nice.

Are you sure about this? I ask innocently because I know DVC exchange rules differ significantly from RCI's.

March trip, April UY, so you banked 2015 points into 2016 and used 2016 points? (April 2016 to end of March 2017 being the 2016 UY for you, I believe?) If so, yes they will expire end of March 2017.

As long as you are more than 30 days out from your check-in, your 2017 Use Year points will be placed back into your account no problem.
